Is this overkill?

would waste that mount on money on rather get 8800 gt or gts and wait till new graphics card reliesed then sell gt/gts buy another one and so on fallow the cycle

If you've got £450 to spend, SLI 8800GTS-512 is a better option (provided you have an sli-capable mobo, natch).

At 1680x1050 you could probably get away with a single card solution though unless you want to play Crysis or use extreme levels of AA.

imo get a GTS or a GTX

then when the new 9 serieses come out, sell your card and get a new one ;)

Xfired 3870 is much cheaper if your board can do it. Also Sli'd 512mb 8800gt would be cheaper. Personally, I'd get a stopgap card, maybe a 512mb 3850 jobbie and wait for NV 9800 in a couple of months.

For a 22" monitor(just got my Syncmaster 22", it's fantastic, offtopic :P) go for a single card solution, everything else would be a waste. If you really want it now get a GTX or a GTS 512MB, or wait until February-March when the new killer cards are supposed to come out.
