Is this possible with a media player?

I'm looking for a media player that will allow me to schedule/simulate a tv schedule, so that I can have the opportunity to select certain TV shows or films playing at particular times of day. And by that, I mean actually having some sort of digital TV guide, that puts my TV shows and films into a schedule that I can watch each day.

I have had a look around and I am not sure if what I am asking is possible or even what type of media player I need.

I'd say you're looking at a HTPC and writing a custom plugin for XBMC or something.

Surely the point of a media player is you watch what you want when you want, why do you want to restrict yourself and fix things at a certain time?

I remember reading a post about this somewhere....but can't remember where.

Do a search for "creating own tv channel out of own video files"....assuming I've read correctly.

Im sure itll be a whole lot easier just to watch things in a schedule then set them up for one. what if your not around for a show do you expect it to play anyway?

There's a plugin for XBMC called Pseudo TV that might be able to do what you need. I don't use it, but you set up 'channels' and based on your category, and it sorts out the schedules for you and presents an EPG.
