I've read that the new Radeon Xpress 3200 chipset does away with the need for a mastercard when running crossfire on the X1XXX generation of cards.

Could I then run 2 normal X1800XTs both flashed the PE bios (700/800) in crossfire mode? (I heard you can't overclock the cards in crossfire mode.)

Has anyone tried?

No you still need a master card on the x1800 and x1900. These cards need the composing chip on the master card to function correctly. The lower cards can be used master card less though.

No.... did you even read the link that was posted up there from the official ATi websote?

ive also heard that you cant do it on the x18/19 series. but it looks like yet again this has changed. i hope they make it so that you could just buy 2 cards that are the same, i think they need to really as you can get any 2 nvidia cards and use them together.

That wording is so vague as to be pointless.

Currently, you cannot run X1800/1900's without master cards.

Yeah its all a rumour as far as i know at present, supposedly being announced after CeBit, there was an article on h e x u s not long back about it, i posted it in another thread about this a while back, talks about x1800's doing crossfire without the need for master cards, but they need drivers to support it, and the rumoured drivers were the 6.5's i heard which are released beginning of May.

You can already use the x1300/x1600 in Crossfire without master cards, but that article above doesn't specifically say what family of cards don't need them, ive got a hunch that its right about the x1800's, and the rumours are true, but have to wait till the 6.5's in May i suppose to really find out. :)
