Is it possible to have a wirelss access point set up so anyone connected to it only has access to the internet via the router and not network shares on computers on the network?

The access point is a Netgear WG602

Yes - the AP must support 'isolation' mode. If, however or if you have a really fancy AP [like one of those Linksys ones that allow Linux firmware] you can create a seperate VLAN for the wireless.

Both will do what you want.

I can't see any isolation mode.

If changing the subnet will work then I'll do that - sounds simple enough :)

Can I change it to anything I like or does it need to be in the format 255.xxx.xxx.xxx?
Can xxx be anything?

thanks for your help

If you alter the subnet, you'll have to reconfigure all the other devices on your network also. Setting up the correct sharing permissions instead could be simpler.

And be wary of keeping an open wireless network, you never know who might use it and for what.

if using XP, turn off simple file sharing, then just change the file permissions to only allow authenticated users.

if your on your laptop, with same user name and password as the account on you desktop/file server it will let you stright though. if the credentials don't match it will ask you to log on with a user name and password.

also change your workgroup to something other than the default

That's the subnet mask not the subnet, but as norm said it wouldn't work unless you were using VLANs and your router could sit in two networks at once. A wireless AP is transparent, as far as the nodes on the network are concerned.
