Wasn't sure which section to post this in.

A friend just rang me and has asked if i could do the following....

A mutual friend of ours had his car badly vandalised on the night before his wedding, he suspects an ex-wife or one of her associates is responsible.
It has transpired that a business close to where the car was parked has cctv installed and may have recorded the culprit, the problem is it has now been recorded over or "taped over" as he put it.
Would it be possible to retrive this information back ?
The machine in question is a laptop, so obviously i would need access to it, although i'd have to go there rather than be allowed to take it away.

Can i also say the guy whos car was vandalised is very affluent, (the car is brand new Bentley) and is prepared to pay a lot of money if i can get the person/s face to him on the cctv image.

I did a similar thing on another friends laptop, where she lent it someone who then formatted it (wtf?), thereby deleting all her personal photos, i managed to get most of them back for her using an app called Active File Recovery.

What d'ya think ?

Yep, almost 100% sure this can be done. There are plenty of data specialists who have special machines to basically get anything off a disk even if it has been completely formatted.

I know what you're saying, but could I do it ?

From what I understand once the drive has been formatted if new data is written on the same sectors of the HDD then it becomes more difficult to retrieve the data. So it is important not to copy any data to that drive.

There used to be programs that let you retrieve the data google it.
If that don't work you'll have to send the thing off to some data retrieval experts. I once read in pcformat that even if the disk got burned by fire it could still be retrieved.

Looks like you are in luck lol

The CCTV footage is unlikely to be clear enough to pick out someones face. It may be good enough to get a car registration though.
