Is this possible?

lol - right at the bottom damn it, sorry. How hot does it run when your browsing with your current setup.
You will struggle to fin d a VESA mounted passively cooled case ready to run out of the box. I'd imagine it would be a DIY mod.

Hi Cheetah,

What do you use the computer for that requires that i7? mCubed HFX cases would be worth a look, but they aren't cheap. There are similar ones to them, but still aren't cheap.

Could you not build a 140mm (or possibly 200m) fan into the side of your M350 that runs slow and quiet exhausting away from your monitor?

Well its my main development machine. The equivalent i5 is also 77W TDP.

That fan Idea is not a bad one at all, would make for ugly viewing from the back but I suppose I can't complain.

I don't think those mCubed HFX cases are good enough to cool the CPU i use.

I think your main problem is recyling of warm air especially once the fan speeds up due to increasing heat output, compounding the prob. Cutting an intake hole and a shroud to feed the cpu fan/heatsink would be ideal i think. A large 200mm fan might not drive enough air through the current HS (could always go for a larger one with the space saved by not having 120mm fan I suppose) although the air would certainly be cooler.

edit: Nvm, misread the 200mm idea as an intake. Although havin looked at you buildlog pics, as an exhaust fan wouldn't it be competing with the heatsink fan?

I'd take the CPU fan off and just have a 140mm fan exhausting air (200mm is too big).

That should work (its what I had in mind, was writing before ran out the door yesterday). You could also take off any intake fans you might have as the 140mm would draw enough air through those gaps, which should make the case quieter.

Im still not convinced it will improve cooling as the majority of air feeding the exhaust will take the path of least resistance meaning reduced airflow through the HS (albeit at lower temp) but it definitley ought to be quieter. A larger HS would alleviate that. One other factor to also consider is accelerated dust buildup from sucking in air.

My reccomendation would be to cut the vent centred over the cpu. It would give you a variety of configuration options and you can simply pick the one that works best.

A fan working as an intake using one of those magnetic dust filters could help reduce the rate of dust buildup, and having the vent centred over the cpu would allow you to try a shroud to direct air to the HS with either the cpu fan or intake.

Personally I think you want the fan blowing in over the components, lots of vent holes around the case for it to escape from. You could try both and let us know which works better?

Hawker

I don't think anything bigger would actually fit!? The current cooler is practically touching the top of the case.

You're right. I'd amplified the space in my mind since looking at the pics. Might be able to get a wider one with more surface areas however.
Don't know what to reccomend fan wise. You might want to get a grill to aid mounting (plus hides any dodgy cutting) and neaten up the visual.

Wasn't going to do any cutting at all...just mount it straight onto the case and have a grill on the otherside so that I don't catch my fingers in it.

Oh. :(

:p My mind always seems to whip out the dremel and welding mask at any opportunity.

You could go for the meshier type grills to help with the dust then, not as pretty as the metal type though. Could always get both.
