Is it sad that I record all the fuel used, maintenance and maintenance costs for my car?

Does anybody else keep a record of the amount of money spent on a car?

My current car has used £339 in petrol over 4182.45 miles in Canada. Not too bad for 6 months worth of driving. Compared to England it cost £599.85 diesel over 6490 miles.

So am I still sad. :p :o

I've had to start doing this too, as the Subaru is just ... reckless ... with petrol. I need to know, even though it alarms me every single time I add a row to that spreadsheet :(

I don't really do enough miles for it to matter. Managed to last the whole of October on one tank (Just over £40 of fuel.)

I have a Notepad file called Manta Spend so that I can keep a rough eye on what it costs me (parts-wise) to run. Including tyres it's about £350 for the last 18 months.

Like Trifid, I don't really cover enough miles these days to worry much about fuel or economy as I go through just over a tank a month, but I know the Manta does around 20mpg around town and significantly more on a run - in the region of 35-40mpg

I keep a record of fuel and maintenance. Not because I'm worried about fuel, more because I'm curious, and in regards to the maintenance, if I show it to whomever I might sell the car to, it should show how well it's been looked after :)

only thing i do is reset my odometor when i put fuel in to make sure im geting the miles out of the fuel.

if i dont get 90 miles out of £10 i have to know why :p

I keep a fuel spreadsheet, it generates the following..

Total Spend
£1,219.38

Total Miles
7278.3

Total Litres
1090.64

Average MPG
30.34

Pence per mile AVG
0.17

Average miles per 40L
266.94

On sheet 2, I have a log of when parts / maintenance carried out

For years, in all my cars I've religiously recorded fuel put in, miles travelled, and calculated mpg to two decimal places.
The only really economical cars I had were my 1.2L Nova and a Toyota Starlet. I knew it was time to sell the Starlet when it started doing less than 40mpg.
Everything since then has only got low 30s.
As for maintenance, that too - mostly so I can see when things like oil changes next need doing.

I keep all the invoices for repair work and tyres, but haven't really added them up (probably wise!) and I don't really keep an eye on petrol spend, other than checking my CC statement every month.

Not kept a close eye however I added up a while back at 32k ish that I had spent £1250 on tyres/servicing etc and at 40k now I haven't spent anymore although it needs a service soon and a couple of tyres. I thought that was fairly cheap however Evo's long termer RS6 only cost them 2k on servicing, tyres and a set of brakes in 30k.

I don't keep a record of petrol other than check my CC bills however I must have spent about 5-6k to cover the 40k.

i have all the invoices for stuff i've spent on my car, and also the insurance docs.
i added it all up the other month and cried

i haven't kept a record of petrol, but i could work out a rough amount based on the miles i've covered.
i don't really want to know though :o

The only record for me are my credit card statements, don't think I would really want a record to be honest as it would remind me how much I've spent on my car :)

I treat motor costs as a kind of like an unavoidable tax. That is, just a cost that kind of has to come out - so why bother worrying about it or even recording it.

Recording it would make me turn into a saddo that either starts charging his mates petrol money for journeys, or starts trying to drive like a 90 year old man just so I save a few quid on petrol.

I only log costs when modding my cars, i don't log fuel or service costs, for example i logged the full cost to supercharge the MX5, i've as logged the full cost of the work done on my current car.

:o You've got an Opel Manta? Will you be my new best friend? :D

I do mine mainly so I know where all my finances should be at, I hate having 'surprise' expenses, so like to put a set amount away each month into the just-in-case account

Im to scared!

But, £339 would cover me for just over 3 weeks.

I keep thinking about it. I've had a few runs recently where the car has used way more petrol than it should have done and I think it's being stolen where the cap doesn't lock.
