Im going to overhaul my pc, ive chosen the following. I was hoping someone could tell me if i got the right memory & everythng.

Asus M2N32-SLi-DLX Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ Black Edition 3.20ghz AM2
G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PK PC2-8500C5 (2x2GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK)
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775)

I want the GeForce 9 GX2 aswell but its not out till later.

any reason for amd?

are you overclocking?

what is your budget?

you want a 120mm fan to go with the thermalright cooler

my current setup is

amd 64 x2 4500+ overclocked 10% with a similar thermalright heatsink. You think its a little big when im not overclocking much?
asus A8N32 deluxe
2gb corsair twinx 3500ll pro
2x GeForce 7800GTX in SLi

Ive always used AMD, so i kind of like to stick with it. Is intel a much better option then?

Intel is a much better option. I will never go back to amd unless they pull something out off the hat, that will beat Intel..

Ok i decided this cpu is for me cause i dont care about quad core

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB)

What motherboard, heatsink & memory is best to go with it? I have no idea what im doing with intel. Help! :) i want top end stuff but not that fussed on overclocking.

if you want to remain using SLi, then i suggest looking at the Nforce 7 series chipset based MBs, but avoid the nForce 6 chipsets as there are many problems with them, although they may all be related to poor overclocking ability.

for heatsink, the best it the thermalright ultra extreme 120, followed very closely by the tuniq tower ,but you shouldnt notice much difference betwen the two

for memory, get pc2-6400 RAM if you dont really want to OC, or may just OC a tiny bit. get PC-8500 RAM if you want to push your CPU to its limits

An excellent CPU choice imo :) It's just a shame they've gone up in price so much in the past month :(

These are my suggestions for other components:

CPU heatsink: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-048-TR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=821
CPU fan: Your choice of 120mm :)
RAM: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-069-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813
Mobo: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-088-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=946

And lastly, I'd opt for a 3870X2 to go in that mobo :)

Have a look at this.

Personally I think its a lot better to have quad core and do a very slight overclock to 3ghz than dual core for £35 more! :)

Is quad core worth it? i dont multitask that much.

I understand that quad core is 4 cores working together side bt side spreading the load & not say 4x 2.5ghz cores adding up to become 10ghz of power?

Yeah quad core is 2 dual cores added together that share the load so not a single 10ghz core ;)

I personally think quad is a better option, more things nowadays are being coded to run on multiple cores so its gonna be better in the long run, its also cheaper at the moment, so for me its a non starter going dual core.

Peace :)
