Hi Guys,
Is this spec ok for a decent server, mainly being used for file sharing and an ftp server. Will everything work together and is the PSU suitable to that case as it needs to have long cables?

I think you are going rather overkill here unless it will come under serious amounts of use. Will you be expanding from that base significantly? Also if it is likely to come under enough use to justify the rest of it then surely quad core is worth considering?

It is all compatible. I'd query the X48 based motherboard though, the main benefits of it are in the dual PCI-E 16x slots for Crossfire (not important here) and PCI-E 2.0 compliance (again not massively important unless it might be upgraded with a good graphics card later), dual gigabit LAN and 1600mhz FSB support might be more important though I suppose.

I'm afraid I don't know about the cable length but you can get extensions if necessary.

Great, thanks.

Filesharing and an FTP server? I have an old compaq p3 500mhz running linux thats been doing that and streaming DVD ISO files over the network perfectly quickly for about 10 years! As said, it really is overkill!
