Well it's a lot better than my Cosham made 2008 PC.
If you fold then 6 or 8 cores are better, but depends on what you need it for.
I don't play games hence a less spec pc will do.

System looks good , but how is the 970 performing at 1440p ?
970 needs to be overclocked (does +260 core/+200 memory) to maintain 60fps in Dark Souls 3 at max settings otherwise I hover between 55-60. Not played many more modern titles recently so can't really measure much beyond that. If there's a benchmark I can run I'll do that. I went through DOOM last year and don't recall too many/if any real issues.
Doom churns out mad fps. Harder games to run at 1440p with a 970 would be Witcher 3, The Division, GTA V, to name a few.
I'd say keep going till you hit a wall with some game, then get the best video card at that time which you can afford. Maybe try overclocking the RAM for a very slight improvement. 1333MHz seems a bit low. XMP on?

Pretty good system I'd say.
Gpu may struggle on highest settings at 1440p on some more demanding games though.

Thing with XMP is that if I enable it the cores stay locked at 4400 at all times which was a concern for me in regards to wearing out the chip and producing unneeded heat/energy. I'm not sure if any gains from that are worth it?

Your rig isn't widely dissimilar to mine and it should still do the job for pretty much anything you throw at it. I would suggest considering upgrading your 970 to a 1070 though. I did the same a few months back and it makes a huge difference at 1440p. Much like you I've gone from finding the Witcher 3 a struggle to just whacking everything to max and enjoying 50-70fps depending on what's going off on screen.
Valid point which I'll keep in mind. Landscape may be quite different when the 970 really is no longer good enough at all for 1440p/60fps even after dropping some stuff. We're a ways off that I guess.

Got my setup way back in 2014 and was wondering if there's been any major leaps in either GPU or CPU tech that would warrant a noticeable upgrade against the current system? Gaming at 1440p btw. I just feel like I've had this forever.
