Is this a screen problem or the ribbon video cable? The color changes depending on what is on the screen and does show up in the BIOS, so it's a hardware issue

Any comments gratefully received

Could be fault in cable.
Would be best to try other cable if you.

Also if you have any other signal source like laptop, you should try it.
That would tell if it's some graphics card fault or not.

Looks to me like it could be the graphics card. Does the corrupted pattern change if you only change resolution?

Hi, no it doesn't change at all. I don't think it's the card as it doesn't show up on an external monitor, so the card is putting out a good signal

Hmmm... If you have separate integrated and discrete graphics then switching between them would totally rule it out.

I wouldn't imagine a bad ribbon connector would just affect that part of the screen but I could be wrong.

Does the pattern remain the same and just the color changes?
Does the pattern or color change as the monitor heats up with the screen display remaining the same?

It's a laptop LCD so it doesn't heat up much
The color changes according to what is on the screen, but in the same small band at the bottm, so if it's a white page of Word then it will be lighter, on a dark grey background it goes green

If it's always exactly the same pixels that are affected then it may be the monitor. Some laptops have a display test mode that they can enter during the boot - you'd probably have to look up what keys to press. If you can get something that's displayed only by the monitor that covers that section, and the problem is still there, then you'd know the monitor was at fault.

There's a Toshiba diagnostic program which I ran but it didn't test the screen like I need
I have ordered a new screen and hope it's that, it's an easy fix, the cable requires almost complete disassembly and would be a pain
Thanks for the help

Did you try reseating the screen cable just in case its come loose ? Some manufacturers now just use tape to keep the screen cable in place to save money and heat can cause it to come off and then through natural movement the cable comes loose.
