My mate seems to think that if you have number plates on your car that are too small, have fancy letters or is even the wrong number plate for the car, you only get a £15 fine, that can't be true can it?

(not that I want chavtastic number plates)

Police don't really care (Also since talked to my sister and traffic police don't either, but may add it onto other things if your car is pulled over for other reasons.)

Police can take the number plate off your car there and then, also driving with illegal plates is the same as not having any. The fine is the same as no plates.

i'm pretty sure it can be a fine of upto a grand, and if your abusing a personalised plate (ie messing with the spacing) you can get the plate taken off you - although your more than likely to just get a £30 fine and told to put a proper one on, then get the full wack if your caught doing it over and over again

No, it isn't true.

Generally, the fine for slightly mis-represented plates is £30, but it can be a maximum of £1000.

If you think running around with fake plates will get you only a 30 quid fine, you can think again :)

The wrong plates for the car is an entirely different matter to plates with fancy lettering.

Fancy lettering will probably go un-noticed, and at worst a slap on the wrist and maybe £30 and told to get them redone.

i was fined with a £30 , it might of been £60 actually..cant remeber to be honest (fixed penalty ticket) on the m62 by traffic police in my old car a year or so ago , as that had a fancy text lettering from when i bought it (which also cocks all the letter align/spacing up) they told me the law regarding the correct spacing of the reg on the plates and these new cameras ( which i take it are the auto recogniton for tax/insurance..ect which are about now) and took photos front and back of the car and told me to change them asap and if im caught again i would goto court/fined heavier bla blah blah :) so i got new plates done within the week , afterall it wasnt a private or worthy of anymore trouble.
:(

What about plates that are lot smaller with smaller letter? For example I have seen several Evo's with tiny front plates down in the corner of the bumper, and also many smaller ones on MR2's as well, makes them hard to make out at the petrol station....

if you have an imported car with no space for a UK size plate your aloud to use the motorbike sized lettering - kinda silly really as there then isn't any reason you shouldn't be able to use the same size for all cars

I had a tiny front plate on my '2 Turbo, it never got a mention from the police, even with them infront of me and walking past it in the street etc.

I dont think they really care.

I suppose it depends on the police for what area you live in. someone I worked with got done for the wrong type of font, even though it was spaced properly and on full sized plates.

The plates are meant to be in normal script (no fancy text), and the letters have to be 79.4cm in height.

And yes, it probably does depend on how seriously your local force takes it. :)

Thats taller than some cars.*

Btw. You are safe in Essex Police, due to not wanting more paper work and having to gain statements.

The main reason for the Police not taking kindly to number plates with fancy lettering is because the SPECS cameras can't read them accurately.

Mikes got a smaller plate on his, even had a officer tell him about it and not do anything about it.
