Is this what PC multiplayer is like?

So, yes, I bought CoD:MW last week when it was on special offer. Fired it up and tried out the multiplayer today. WTF?! First of all choosing a server is a task unto itself. How the heck do you know what's a good one or a bad one? I just went for the one with the smallest ping which had players on. Then I got kicked - something to do with PnkBstrA.exe - so I had to fanny about on Google determining what was wrong. Had to install PunkBuster services. Never even heard of it before.

Then next thing, I was dead before I could even see the other person. Is this normal? I was on the floor spewing my innards out before I even had a chance to aim. Do you need reflexes in the range of nanoseconds as opposed to milliseconds on the consoles? I thought it was totally barmy and turned it off after 5 minutes.

Is this a joke aimed at IW for making out that server lists are complicated?

Practice. Get better.

:)

You can't really compare console and PC multiplayer experiences as they are different. Bit of a baiting thread maybe? :/

To be fair, I remember my first ever PC MP experience being similar.

Presented with a massive list of servers with symbols and numbers everywhere, pick one at random and then spend the next half an hour getting shot by people you dont even see.

It can be a bit of a baptism of fire, especially if you pick an established game - most people playing COD4 online will have been at it a good year at least now, even the rubbish people will be pretty sharp at it.

Yes, good point, everyone else was 5 star rank so how the devil are you supposed to find other noobs to play against?

It can happen even to experienced gamers.

I've been playing online games for a good few years now, went on Burnout Paradise, hit up Freeburn Online and within 5 minutes I was told to **** off and got kicked. No idea what was going on, not bothered trying again.

Was the same when i first started (but even more hassle as i didnt know what the hell a patch was, never did play Half-Life online until i found out games get updated with patches) :p.

I don't really see your problem? The server lists are complicated ...... that will all become clear after a few sessions. The game is too hard, well why not just practice more?

Sounds like you gave it a go for 20mins, realised it was different to consoles and then just packed it in. Pc multiplayer is incredible deep, playing on a random server as a noob is just the tip of the iceberg. Playing at a high level, in a clan against another clan all with voice comms is somthing else.

It's not meant to be. I just crave to play with mouse and keyboard on console multiplayer but now I have had the chance to do so, it just seems ten times more difficult.

Welcome to the world of PC's! In general higher level gamers play on the pc than on consoles, as the keyboard and mouse is more accurate than gamepad.

read the name of the server it will tell you everything you need to know. the rest is up to you, you like hardcore HQ games with 32 players?

set the filters to hardcore, then sort by game type and pick out the sever with the number of players you like best. (obviously with a decent ping)

Side effect of having 3+ different Os's to work on and billions of different hardware configurations sadly.

You mean you where spawn killed?

or you ran out and got shot, the first meh Cod4 is an appaling multiplayer game in this respect.

if the latter yeah it's harder, although look at it this way, cod4 is considered one of the easiest MP games on the pc.

Try CS:S tbh, no spawn killing but you're going to be killed a lot while you learn to aim quickly and accurately.

or try CS 1.6 if you are masochistic.

There are quite a few servers that say "noobs server" or "newbies welcome"

usually these aren't full of newbs (people who lack skill through inexperience but are decent chaps) but noobs, people who just suck but think they're great so join these servers to hopefully get easy kills.

seriously though try CS:S or l4d both much much more fun than cod4.

best mp game for me at the moment for is l4d though. (in terms of fun, before the zomg skilllzzzz nazi's show up)

tbh stick to cod 4 if you new to online gaming but seeing as u arnt new on here why now?

trying cs now this late on in the day is suicide ! sorry cs is a lot harder to learn than cod 4 you will be handed your ass on a platter !

the server lists are really easy to get used to and piece of pices :D

now you know what we mean when we say "a mouse and keyboard is far faster and more accurate than a pad"

Heh. Theres many console players that I work with who would argue with that fact. I keep telling them, I could wipe the floor with them if they ever let them both consoles and PC's connect to the same servers. Why don't they believe it?

As said, practise, practise, practise. One of the best games to practise on is without a doubt CS:S. Find a server called GunGame. Teaches you to be excellent with every weapon.

Try Team Fortress 2. It's quite simple to pick up and not so fast paced that you won't know what hit you. It can be extremely fast and cluttered on certain maps though lol.

lol, same where i work.

i remember reading IW doing an interview in pczone or pcgamer and they said they were asked to make cod4 cross platform, but they said they didn't want to scare console gamers away from playing fps online.

say's it all really.

hour getting shot by people you dont even see.
It's why I always join servers with the killcam enabled, and hate servers without it with a passion...

Meh CSS is **** imo, it's all about headshots, you can empty a whole magazine at someone from a few feet and they still live because it does so little damage and the accuracy is poor. The only way to play well in CSS in my experience is short bursts on the heads. That type of gameplay is boring imo...

L4D is very good but gets boring sooner than CoD4.

Anyways, if new to CoD4, try joining servers that are :
Non Hardcore.
Killcam enabled.
Not just 1 map, so rotating maps...
less then 20 players ( more and you'll die too quickly before you what's happening if you're new and don't know the maps...).
AVOID the maps Shipment&Killhouse...

The punkbuster anti cheat crap is indeed very poorly designed, I've had to update manually FOUR times now as it fails to update itself properly, very frustrating and fail from IW imo for using it.
