Is this whats causing my system to hang?

I have been having a few problems with getting my system stable at 4GHZ overclock. I would be able to get my system stable under 8 hours of prime, and would pass both OCCT and LinX. But whilst just browsing the net, my system would hang, with lights on the keyboard and mouse going out, even though my system would pass all stress test.

Today i was watching a video clip on a webpage, i turned on my amp to get sound through my creative sound card (in sig), when yet again my system froze up!!!!, i then restarted my pc and watch the same video clip again, and yet again the system froze up. It then clicked (well maybe), as my creative soundcard it connected to my 2nd PCI-E slot, would having "PCI Express Frequency" in my BIOS set to 101mhz, cause my system to hang as my soundcard is also connected to 1 of the 3 PCI- slots?? As i have now changed the option to auto and i watch the video clip again this time it didnt cause my PC to crash. So what do you think??

Bugger, still happens! I dont think it can be the gfx card, as i dont think watching a avi clip in a webpage would stress the gpu enough, would it? Ill try removing the soundcard now and see how i get on with onboard. If onboard works, this will be the 3rd thing ive had to RMA to Overclockers this month!

Well just tried the onboard sound and caused my system to reset, after watching the clip for about 50 seconds!!! This surely cant be a problem due to my OC can it, i mean ive run prime twice for 8 hours each, passed OCCT and LinX, and all passed fine, yet when i watch a stupid video in a browser it cuases my system to restart or crash!!

Yeah i reinstalled windows 7 a few days back, so its no my OS. The next thing to try is another GFX i guess.

That said about it not being my OC thats causing the problem, i loaded default settings in BIOS and i was able to what the whole 8 minute video clip without my system crashing or resetting!!! But how can it be the OC, as it passed above tests fine!!!

Yeah ill try that now.

I just upped my Vcore to 1.3500 (was 1.28 something) and QPI to 1.335, (was 1.275) and the system still crashed!!! Thats a hell of a increase in voltages for a system that passed all stress tests, and still fails on watch a video in a browser.

If furmark passes, im at a loss, ill try an earlier set of gfx drivers, and if that still crashes, a compelelty different gfx card

Just werid that it will still crash no matter what voltages i put through it, yet when i load stock settings, it doesnt!. Maybe it has something to do with the gfx card under too much stress, as the system is OC, and so its the gfx card OC!!

EDIT: Just ran furmark with no problems, now im stumped!!

Ok ive done that, so next time ill right down the number, but is never appears to be BSOD screen, just ever the sytem hangs with all lights out on keyboard and mose or the pc just resets itself.

EDIT: i think ive found the problem, RAM timmings, was set to 8,8,8,24,2. I changed them to 9,9,9,28,2, and am currently through the 2nd play through of said cursed video clip and hasnt crashed yet!!! But i though these RAM timmings werent great to start of with, and now there even worse at these settings, i though 8,8,8,24,2 was a given??

Well the system just locked up on me again with the keyboard and mouse lights going out, what would cause the lights on the mouse and keyboard to go out though, as that seem a strange thing to do?

I have now lowered the memory mulitplier down to x6 instead of x8, as i think its defo a memory issue not a cpu clock issue. I have noticed under the memory clock mulitplier setting where it says the memory speed, it has 2 speeds doesnt it, the one of the right im guess is the current speed, and the 1 on the left is the default?? If so then the speed on the right is 1066, is this correct for a defualt value, as i though the memorys defualt speed is 1600?? Im current on BIOS F9E, so i might go back to F7 if still having problems

Thanks for the reply. I have a corsair 750 watt psu, so that should defo be up for the task, so we can rule that out I guess. Are you saving to delete all devices from the device manage to do with the sound card, or everything?? I just can't see how it can pass all stress tests but then lockup on just watching a video in a browser window.

Going back to the ram timing, I have turbo enabled and have it set to 191x20 so when the turbo kicks in the multiplier goes up to 21. I did have the ram set to x8 which game me a ram speed of around 1520, so was well under the 1600 speed unless the turbo boosts the ram speed aswell??, but for the time being have change it to x6.

Regarding what i said about the 2 speed values under the ram multiplier in the bios, should one of them actually be at 1066 as the other value is what my ram speed currently is at, so what Is this 1066 value??

Right i started Prime this morning (7am) before going to work, came back 9 hours later still going strong. Stopped prime and restarted my PC, read my emails and then had a shower, came back to a blue screen....

Also had this report from windows after i reset from the blue screen:

Try looking at the dump file:
C:\Windows\Minidump\092309-9157-01.dmp

tht may give u an answer

Plus update any or all drivers that can be updated to the newest 1s and see if it still occurs.

plus has ur anti virus, installed any drivers tht could be casuing this?
or a backup program?

Could use this to see if any drivers are not compatible with vista

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/

if all fails reinstall Vista/XP Win 7 and install drivers 1 by 1 until u hit the jackpot

If all fails then im lost.

What prog do i need to have to look at the dump file?, im using Avira antivirus, and im not aware of anything that would have installed

Seems there have been reported problems with windows 7 and sleep mode, but that wouldn't explain why you get bluescreens while watching videos on the interwebs.. I'm thinking you might need a windows reinstall, are you using the open beta, the RC or the msdn release?

I think i downloaded the RC from MS website

btw is this when ur only watching this particular Clip on the tinternet?

Nah just seems to be any video clips.

Im looking in the Advanced tab for the power options, theres a few options:

'power saving mode', its set to Maximum performance atm
'Sleep' Allow hybrid sleep, its set to On atm, and Allow wake timers, which is enabled atm

Now this is one that stuck out to me, 'USB selective suspend setting', which is enabled, the reason i say this sticks out is, when my pc hangs the lights on my keyboard and mouse all go out, so this might be releated to that??

Yeah my GPU is Overclocked, but by the manufacture, BFG, i have ran furmark and it didnt crash my system. The video format is a flash video

r u using x86 or x64 version of your OS

if so u can dl this

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx

and dl the correct 1 with ur OS

then once installed follow these steps;

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. Change to the Debugging Tools for Windows folder. To do this, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
cd c:\program files\debugging tools for windows
3. To load the dump file into a debugger, type one of the following commands, and then press ENTER:
windbg -y SymbolPath -i ImagePath -z DumpFilePath
kd -y SymbolPath -i ImagePath -z DumpFilePath

did the following but go the following message,

loading Dump File [blah blah blah]

Could not open dump file [dumpfilepath]. win32 error 0n2
"The system cannot find the file specified"
Debuggee initialization failed, Win32 error 0n2
"The system cannot find the file specified"

Well ive just run the video clip 3 times and it hasnt crashed, this is after changing my RAM timmings. I may put them back to what they were and see if i can get it to crash again

Ok, i have just managed to recreate the bluescreen i got awhile ago, i remembered that when i restarted my PC before i went to have a shower that, windows 7 was sitting on the "Now restarting system" screen for ages. I have now restarted my PC again (to change my RAM timmings), and it was doing the same thing again, just sitting on the restarting screen, then all of a sudden the same blue screen appeared!! Now what would cause windows to just sit at the restarting screen, and then to blue screen??

Well it was the game site, gamespot. But i think ive narrowed it down to my RAM. I set the timmings back to 8,8,8,24,2 and x8, and it crashed 2 times in a row. So my system locking up must be related to RAM, but why would it cuase it to crash when watching a video?

EDIT: Have now set it back to x6 Ram mulitiplier but left the Ram timmings at 8,8,8,24,2, and it played the video fine!!

Ok will do that. Looking at the defualt 'Memory Frequency" value, 1066, in the below pic, shoudl that actually be 1066???...

dscf4790e.jpg

On a side note, if i click on restart within windows, my system will spend ages on the restarting windows screen, after been on that screen for about a minute the lights on my keyboard and mouse go out, and then 2-3 minutes later i get the blue screen mentioned above. However, if i start my PC up and when i get to the windows login screen, if i select restart from there the PC restarts normally!!, its only if i actually log into windows and then click restart do i get this problem!!

Have you read this?

BTW what sort of voltages are you putting through your memory and cpu?

I have 1.64 volts for my ram, QPI is 1.29 and vcore 1.28. Have just finished running memtest with no errors.....

dscf4792.jpg

Is there a 64bit version of memtest as this says its only 32bit

I think i posted earlier on in the thread that i upper the vorce to 1.35 and QPI to 1.335 and it still locked, so i dont think its to do with the voltage. Its related to the Memory freq multiplier, whenever i have it a x8 it locks up at some point when watch i flash vid in a browser, but when set to x6 it doesnt!!

When I ran memtest I ran the ram at x8. But surely if it was to do with voltages then Prime, OCCT, and LinX would have failed at some point, but they didn't?

The thing I can't figure is, how would playing a flash video be linked to the ram multiplier? What I might do tonight is, uninstall all program from within control panel and see if that has any effect, if not I will try bios F7

i have the same problem with the exact same setup, i have tried several differant options in the bios, i can only get a stable overclock with easy tune...lol

The guys at ocuk have sent me several different bios setups, but my memory keeps freezing my system....

Let me know if you find a solution for yours?

Really? That's interesting to know. As I am 99% sure it's the memory that's the problem. In which case there could be a dodge batch of ram from patriot maybe. I'm tempted if I can't get it to work just to buy different ram.

Dysfunctional, what are your memory settings in bios including voltage, also what bios version are you on?
