Ok, i go to MANCAT college...

I'm in 4 days a week for the academic year, working in a white walled room with not much on them...

But get this, there isnt one single window :(

I also work on eMacs which are a total pos and get immense headaches

Should we be working in windowless rooms with 15 min breaks and only 30 minutes lunch?

Or im just a big girl :o

Many working people would only get 15+30 min breaks as well, but I don't agree they should be windowless.

Saying that, at my old college the windows were BOLTED shut, so you couldn't open them, and it was insanely hot in there, all in the name of "safety". What are we going to do, make a suicide pact? :p

Every working environment has to have a window which lets in natural light.

And 15 min breaks every two hours is the minimum for working with a VDU.

Using a Mac makes you gay.

Nothing wrong with a windowless room as long as the lighting is good. If you are getting headaches have an eye test.

It cant be right though really, you need to expose yourself to natural light if your working on macs for 7 hours a day...

We get 4 breaks including lunch, lunch should be 1 hour or atleast 45 mins...

edit: i now wear glasses since working in this room for 2 months

Not true.

All offices and rooms in a working environment have to have a source of natural light and a windows in the door to the room, unless having such light would damage the work going on in the room.

The minimum amount of time away from the computer is 15 minutes every tow hours. If you are getting this, then you should see your line manager about getting an eye test, which your company will have to pay for. They will also have to pay for the frames of any glasses needed for you to do you job.

What about server rooms?

Some of our departments have no windows letting in natural light at all (but these are secure areas). They're not even allowed to leave the premises until their shift is over for security reasons. Their union representatives haven't brought anything up, and the HSE haven't said anything to the contrary either.

They dont have mercury, fluro or energy saving lights do they?

They give me big headaches:(

I'm in college from 8:45 till 3:45, 2 days a week. I choose to skip all breaks.

If anything my back is getting ****** by these horrid chairs. :(

It was said on the first day that on Wednesday we could either take the breaks the government says we need to have or not, I chose otherwise and took the liberty of extending this to the other day too.

Technically you shouldn't be working in a server room. One the ambient noise in such a room is generally above what is considered healthy for long term exposure. Two, having someone use the room as an office makes it unsecure, because you have to have a window in the door so that people can see in.

If there is no where else for you to go, then your company has to give the room a natural source of light. The best way of doing this is a roof window. The opening at the top is too small for a person to get through and the opening at the bottom has a diffuser which spreads the light around the room.

Our office is big and open plan and i must sit at least 30 meters from the nearest window. And the windows are heavily tinted and always have the blinds down. No natural light for me.

The sun got low the other day and cast shadows accross my desk and I actually thought to myself "wow...sunlight on my desk"
