¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Right now I'm using x11vnc on an ubuntu install, and it's working real well.

I'm accessing this machine over the internet, so I was wondering if I would notice much speed difference going over to tightvnc?

I also do not have encryption set up, but I plan to once I get it running properly, I was wondering if was possible to access a linux machine from a windows client using encryption? Would I have to use putty or anything like that?

No. If you're adament about sticking with a free version, then go with UltraVNC. It has better encoding and generally better development standards. TightVNC contains a lot of small bugs/issues that have been patched in UltraVNC builds.

If you want to actually make use of your VNC setup, buy VNC Personal/Enterprise Edition.

Built in encryption, file transfer, chat, address book features to mention a few. Constant active development, technical support.

Thanks, I'll give ultravnc a whirl. I don't really need all the features of realvnc, I only occasionally remote admin, but it's nice if it's fast and secure. :)
