Is toner saver worth using?

I'm getting mixed results at google that seem to think the toner saving is anywhere between a few percent to 30% and some feel that it's pointless as when the toner counter reaches zero then you just endup with unused toner (and if you reset the counter then you run the risk of damaging the drum) so i wondered if it was worth it?

Honestly, the question is fine if you have just a basic knowledge of printers.... even if you need a quick google it basically gives you the option of a printer 'cartridge' or facial toner and seeing as we're on a computer forum it's unlikely it's about facial toner... I know printers aren't used as much these days but most should know a laser printer uses a toner cartridge on a computer forum imo...

As to the question, it's honestly a hard question to definitively answer because the way you use the printer and what you print has an impact but (on those printers with them) counters will override stuff even if you have toner left, it's not like an inkjet where you can usually see there is ink left.

IF the printer has built in toner saver it's probably safe to use it but it will reduce print quality etc (think draft mode for inkjets, so should be fine for letters etc imo) but if you're using after market tools to do it I'd avoid it. Having said that check the manual of the printer, HP for example doesn't recommend full time use of it's 'toner saver' mode (most likely they want to sell more toner)

Unless any fellow OCUK users can give their own personal experience then i've given up on this to be honest as from what i can see at Google there have been at least 3 different ways since the 90's on how laser printers gauge the toner level and then readjust for the toner saving, hence why i'm getting completely conflicting information of if it's worth it.

1) Old fashioned mechanical page counter.

2) Laser head activity per page.

3) A electronic sensor that reads directly from the tone cartridge.

If you are using a lot of toner and you are looking to save money, then it may be worth it to try and reset the toner counter. However, if you are only using a small amount of toner, then it may not be worth it. Additionally, if you are worried about damaging the drum, then it may be best to avoid resetting the toner counter. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide if resetting the toner counter is worth it or not.
