Is Uncharted 1 really a bit pants?

I got a PS3 a few weeks ago having finally got the urge to play the exclusives that I can't play on my 360.

Top of my list was the Uncharted games.

This game seems to be praised almost exclusively but I'm finding it a 6/10 game at best.
The story is just completely forgettable so far (I'm about half way through)

The combat is ridiculously frustrating and unfair, enemies seem to be able to hit you from a mile away with any weapon and you just get waves of enemies (feels like COD at times in the combat) Ammo seems in really short supply yet your enemies never run out. Each combat seems to start with me frantically trying to find some cover while gently sticking my head out and instantly getting 4/5 enemies hitting me from various distances.

The jetski section was appalling, why didn't they give the girl some A.I. and let her shoot  instead of blasting through the ruins on a jetski you have to resort to inching forwards slowly, then switch to shooting to shoot someone, switch back and inch forwards again...breaks all the excitement that it could have had.

Also really disappointed with the balance between combat and adventuring/puzzles. It's basically just a shooter, barely any puzzles or exploring to be done :(

I've heard the series gets much better (I've got the second waiting for me) but this one is just a grind, has it aged badly or was it just overhyped because it was close to the console launch?

Uncharted is a very highly regarded PS3 title, when I played it I thought it was excellent bar the awful screen tearing.

Uncharted 2 however not only improved this and had no screen tearing the gameplay I felt was much much better.. Uncharted is therefore a decent game, however uncharted 2 is leaps and bounds better IMO.

Play it for the story, however get ready to enjoy uncharted 2, which I'm sure will impress you a lot more.

The first one has aged horrible. I can see why playing it now you would think its abit lame. The second one however is in my top 5 best games ever!

I actually just played through the original again to clean up all my missing trophies and still completely loved the game despite the improvements brought with the sequel.

Played it through on brutal which was a good challenge, albeit extremely frustrating at time due to super enemy aim but I guess thats what made the difficulty level worthy of the name brutal. I found the jetski section fine, I preferred to be in control of the shooting rather than burning about with awful ai missing everyone, it was only the melee combat I wasn't keen on which is why I almost never used melee except for trophies.

I still found the graphics to be excellent and some of the best still of this gen and the gameplay to be great, also what screen tearing are people talking about, after just playing it through last week I can't say I noticed any tearing at all, running a samsung LEA565 in 1080p.

I got round to playing them both this year. I'd say the first one was ok, nothing brilliant, but good enough that I wanted to play the second considering the fuss that was made about it.

Would have to say Uncharted 2 is an entire level above the first one. It does everything so much bigger and better, and the combat balance is much better, even on the higher difficulties (I only ever really got stuck on one bit).

I'd give the first one a 7/10 (but a solid 7 at that). The second is easily a 9.

For its time, it was amazing. Now, it's still good but other games (somewhat ironically, its sequel being on of the most prominent) have made it show its age.

Have to say, not played it for quite some time, but I'd say as most games do age it could just be that..

I remember uncharted being a really good game when I played it but i do now wonder how well it stands up, uncharted 2 however looks every bit as good as when I played it when it was first released... I played uncharted 2 a few weeks ago actually as it happens, still excellent lol

Thing is Uncharted 1 offered something that was a relatively new idea at the time, a cover based, fast paced shooter with platforming and some (rather lacking i'll admit) puzzle elements. Since then loads of games have created the same sort of feel.

The sequel has things that aren't as easy to duplicate and are far more timeless such as amazing set pieces, a great story, outstanding characters almost perfect pacing and many other things. The gameplay is actually near identical in Uncharted 2, but there's so much more behind the scenes that makes it oh so much better and, imo, more important than its predecessor.

Glad to hear the second is better, I'll struggle my way through the rest of this then!

What would people recommend next out of the exclusives? Quite keen on Infamous.

It is worth getting through, just so you know the overall story. Infamous is well worth playing. First game I ever bothered going for a platinum on.

i was literally thinking of replaying uncharted 1 today! but im scared it may look/feel dated now as i played the 2nd one to platinum!

i cant remember the game at all! :D

People always say play the first to understand the story fully but I didn't feel the need to. I played Uncharted 2 before I played the first game and I didn't feel like I was missing out on the story at any point whatsoever.

Imo its more to get to know the characters. For example in Uncharted 2 when Sully arrives it was a fantastic moment for those who knew the character, for people new to the series they wouldn't have much of a clue what their relationship was or why he was significant.
