Is UPS overkill for my media NAS?

Got a Synology DS1815+ with 4 x 10TB Red disks in it, attached to an APC BR900GI UPS.

Great NAS and the UPS has worked without fault now for about 7 years.

I'm at a crossroads though, the UPS battery needs replacing as it's dying. The part number is APCRBC123 and retail price is around £75.

Option 1: Spend the £75 for the new battery and hope it goes another 5 years+
Option 2: Remove the UPS from the chain and sell the UPS on for probably very little without a battery?

Power here is pretty good don't feel like I get many power cuts, but I guess the UPS is protecting against more than just power loss, but blips, voltage changes etc as well.

Hello mate. If it were me I would replace the battery. I changed one on my old smart ups years ago and it lasted about the same amount of time.

Hey fella? how's the house and the AC going?

First I have to pay to get a loose tile on my roof fixed, now this! Unexpected expenses taking my money away from more fun purchases! :D

Option 3: Buy the lead acid batteries on their own for a quarter of the price and swap the terminals onto them yourself.

personally id keep the ups.

have a word with ups-trader, they're normally very competitive for replacement batteries. although they dont have the RBC123 listed on their site right now.

my rbc7 for my smart ups 1500 were about £72 shipped. every 3 years roughly that isnt too bad.

As above, batteries are a consumable, replace them and enjoy potentially another 7 years, though I’ve often found that the cheaper (reputable brand) options don’t tend to last quite as long as the originals. I often buy used UPS units without batteries and order a new set to install as it’s a cheap way of getting a decent UPS for not a lot of money.

The house is going well. I've not done any decorating since early Sept. New carpets in the hall and stairs going in next Tuesday :D I've not had to use the AC much as you would no doubt expect. I popped it on a few times to test the heat mode which works very nicely!

I am waiting to spend a load of money on CCTV and NAS equipment but gotta do it over a few months, over spent a bit recently with things. I've bought 1 CCTV camera to play with. The system will require lots more network installation which I plan to do in the next few weeks.

Thanks chaps I shall buy some new batteries for it, taking onboard all that was said here :)

Yeah I've used the heat mode on the AC a bit and it's good, although like you not much. I'm in a detached house though so whilst new it doesn't have any adjoining properties to keep it warm, it's doing OK but does lose a bit of heat. As I'm home all day I just blast the heating on for an hour in the morning and it retains that all day at the mo.

For NAS I do love my Synology but they aren't cheap!

Just don't get cheap batteries, we went from APC replacement units, to batteries (can't remember the brand), back to APC as the replacement batteries were lasting 1/3 of the time that the APCs would. £75 in the grand scheme of things isn't much, I'd just go for them to be honest.
