Is Vista™ Home Basic.... very basic?

Thinking about getting a laptop (Acer Aspire 5051AWXMi) and was wondering what it means exactly by 'Basic'

- No movie maker HD
- No drive encryption
- no sheduled back-ups
- No tablet pc support
- No premium games
- No windows slideshow

Also restricts the number of windows you can have open, if i remember rightly.

it's for emerging markets (ie developing countries) - it's not made for PC enthusiasts.

According to a magazine I read, seemed a bit funny to me though? Maybe a typo? They say "no multiple CPUs" so it can't be that mistake?

Are you sure you aren't confusing Vista Home Basic with Vista Starter Edition?

Vista HB still has a lot going for it and there are certainly no restrictions on the number of windows you can have open.

Home Basic doesn't have the Mobility Centre, which handles power management etc for notebooks.

I would certainly imagine it supports dual-core CPUs; it'd be quite silly of it not to, given that XP does. As ic1male says, I think some are getting Home Basic confused with the Starter version, which does have much tougher limits.

Limiting windows! Why would Microsoft do something like that? Even if thats not the case with the basic version.... why why why :confused:

One other thing, if i got fed up with vista, how would xp pro run on a 64bit system? I imagine it wouldn't be able to take full advantage of the processor, but would there be any noticeable improvement in performance?

Also, what is the minimum ram you would run using vista, is it a memory hog, 512mb or 1gb?

you're right, i was confusing the two.

think I read somewhere about the home versions being limited to one physical processor but no limit to cores.
