Is VM doing something to my internet connection?

I had a quick look at Virgin forums and it looks like they have started throttling Torrents and Newsgroups on all connections. (except port 443 on ssl which is strange)

It will be game over if they blanket throttle 443.

Are you sure that's the case? I'm getting throttled on 443 SSL and that's even after midnight! Annoyed to say the least.

NO downloads today, just internet browsing (text websites). This is on VM 20Mbit line. This has been going on for over 2 months now... virgin say that is not a big enough problem to warrant fixing my UBR.

If you want accurate packetloss type this in your CMD.

pathping bbc.co.uk

This will give you hops + latencies between hops and packet loss between hops, its a really nice little tool. Use bbc.co.uk as the base, this is the standard over at VM forums.

I personally find speedtest.net and pingtest.net to be very accurate, some people on here get very dodgy results though :D.

This is while they've got reported problems in my area. Best ISP I've ever been with, so many of my mates having probs with VM at the moment too so may be the weather?

100% loss on first jump is normal., no need to worry about it. Do the test at peak time 6.30 onwards, im waiting for packet loss to occur so I can ring VM and lay down an ultimatum.

I told them its been happening 3 months and he said "nothing I can do as ur utilisation looks fine", so plan is to ring back when its bad. So far 1% packet loss.

me and all my mates on virgin are experiancing massive slow downs, just sticking with it atm as i cant stand the indian call centres

I've given up on India... protocol for me is 150 > Leaving Us > 2 then talk to customer retentions and explain issue and get put through to liverpool (who are about until 10pm). Much less stress, and actually had someone tonight who gave me no bull****, the situation is this.

There is a threshhold for UBRs to be fixed which is 10% remaining capacity in the network... my current UBR is at 11% (89% Util) so just short of the threshold meaning they are not allowed to escalate it. He told me that it it was unfair and stupid, but the fact of the matter is he doesn't know when it will be fixed as it HAS to average past 90% util over the week period (for me this is currently in the 80s).

Pretty much said If I wanted to ditch them as a provider he thinks it wouldn't be unreasonable, or atleast get customer services to make sure im not paying full price for the service while this continues!

So yeah, get yourselves on the phone tomorrow evening and try your best, was on the phone with this guy for 30 minutes and all of it was helpful, atleast I know where i stand.
