is water cooling really worth it?

Depends on the cooler you have now?

I'd unlock the other two cores if I were you, I think that board supports it...

Yes, watercooling is worth it.

Asking how much cooler it would be is a stupid question. Watercooling will run at at a fraction of a degree above ambient if you use enough radiators, or well under room temperature if you put the radiator somewhere cunning.

sounds like either you're reading the socket temp or your not getting accurate temp readings

with that many volts going through your cpu you'll have a much higher load temp tbh...

yes water is worth it, if you don't have adequate cooling now.

water won't make things 'colder', just keep the load temps down, but won't really improve overall temps (idle/light loading etc).

ye the board supports it. i had a quick go at unlocking both extra cores but it wouldnt boot, was gonna try just unlocking 1 core and take it from there but decided to fiddle about getting the highest stable oc i can first.
is it possible to get below room temp on air with a really high airflow over the heatsink?

I would say it depends on the severity of your overclocking over the cost. If you are overclocking lightly then it might not be worth the extra cash because you'll loose the bang for buck. I.e. what you save on OC'ing goes straight on the equipment it takes to cool it..

Consider future upgrades too. Changing a graphics card isn't as straight forward as a simple slot upgrade. You have to fit a new cooler and possibly render it's warranty useless, break down the cooling loop, overnight test and so on..

But hey I love it but these are valid points that are often over looked.

It depends on what you are after mate.

If you want a quiet PC then watercooling both CPU and graphics card can quieten them down, as you can run a big rad and the fans very slowly.

If you want to clock the hell out of your CPU then its worth it as you can have a big rad and run the fans faster and it will disipate more heat quicker than an air cooler.

If you just want the peice of mind that your CPU is running as cool as you can realisticly (??) get it then its great. This is what I have done.

I dont tend to cool the graphics cards as a full cover bloke is expensive and I like to change my cards offen and keep up with the latest tech.

If your PC is not overly loud, and your CPU seems to be running at decent temps anyway, will you see any real benifit?

Like in a fridge or outside on a nice winters day!
Or the garage?

i see what your sayin im just wondering how much closer to room temp im likely to get with a simple wc loop. i suppose there are too many variables tho for you to answer accurately.

It would depend on the size rads, the speed water is pumped, the size of the res, how fast you run your fans, what fans you have, god, loads of things!
If you want to clock your CPU further and are worried about temps then you will not beat watercooling, but for most users and normal use its not really worth it if you ask me.

Mind you, I am much happier not hanging 1kg of copper off my motherboard! But then you could agrue I have a real fire risk if it leaks water!!

christ what is that saying 78oC in speedfan?!

get coretemp/real temp and see what your core temps are, i bet they're higher than you think...

So many options. I want to move to a ground floor apartment and submerge a radiator in a water butt, massive heat capacity instead of fans, and it'll cool down at night. Can't wait :)

No, it's too ill defined a question for us to give a sensible answer to. Watercooling is hugely varied and you've told us nothing about your current set up. Does it help if I tell you my amd 7750BE was loading at one degree higher than it was idling when it was watercooled?

Puma, might be an idea to ask him what rad, fans, pump, CPU block, and where was his rad?
Oh, and what the OC was.

So many things can change how effective a watercooling setup is. For example, some people using passive resiviours (spelling?) can see a 1c drop in temps compared to a normal plexi res!
