I've had a brief play with Win 10 over win 7 pro and wasn't overly impressed. I'm building a new system and have got the chance to either do a clean install of win10 or re-install win7 pro (x64) .. Is there any advantages in speed or gaming with 10 .. is it worth it?

The only advantage in terms of gaming is DX12 support (if your GPU is compatible). There's also security updates as well, 7 will soon be unsupported (mainstream support has already ended and is on extended support until 2020).

And if you're doing a clean install, I found 10 a lot easier and faster to set up. The latest 10 ISO contains the recent Threshold 2 update so there's not that many updates to install after, for 7 even with the SP1 ISO there's hundreds of updates afterwards. 10 is also very, very good at automatically finding drivers too which saves a fair bit of time.

This.

could i try and re-install win7 and THEN update to 10? It would save some £££ it would be a pain in the bum to have to go through all the updates though .. clean would be better though I suppose ...

Each to their own of course but I went back to 8.1 with start 8 I just find it much cleaner than 10. And I found 10 a bit buggy performance wise, random lock ups, via not responding. Maybe I'll try again just before the free upgrade offer expires

There is a big thread about it on here. I haven't done the upgrade myself but when I used a few PC's running it I didn't find it very different from 8.1

I can't say I have had any issues with Windows 10 myself and the performance improvements make it an easy choice tbh. Just make sure to run some of the Privacy tools and use a local account.

i got 10 running on my super old culv laptop from 2009 (ul30a asus), its running windows 10 fine.

the upgrade left all my apps exactly as is, remarkable. it's like im still on the same windows but just a gui install or something.
