Yes, I admit, im still hanging onto windows xp for my life but now their is a crisis

I am building a new i5 machine, 2/4gb ram and debating over hanging back with a DX10 Card or moving to the new 5xxx DX11

Question is: Is windows XP still faster in games? If so that decides two key things. 2 or 4gb or ram and DX10 Card against DX11 card.

Help!

Just go with 7. If it's a new system you're going to see performance increases over your old system anyway, is it really worth holding back your entire OS just for the sake of a few extra FPS (if that's even still the case these days)?

I just remember reading the articles stating XP was still faster...

What are peoples experiences...

(Oh and 32bit Home premium, 2GB or 4gb? )

Keep reading your artciles, stay with your 10 year old OS, and 2Gb ram on a base of 32bit power.
It'll suit your style.

I ran vista from when it first arrived, and I moved to windows 7 when it arrived, both on 64 bit.
I don't recall the last time i experienced game issues.
You are building a new system with a new card, and you are worried your OS might slow you down. It won't.
Go 4Gb and go 64bit.

If there is a difference it'll be tiny. I've been using it since beta and it's been fine.

Somehow i Dont think a 10 year old OS which seems to be the backbone of so much at the moment has done that bad!

the 32 V 64 bit is a difference issue all together - most apps not being able to address that much ram etc etc etc and so on.

My question was really, is windows 7 sucking more power via drops in frame rates then XP?

The recent scores showed XP still a few frames ahead in most games.

The difference between XP & Vista & W7 are minuscule 1-2fps at most. You will not notice a difference at all.

Windows 7 has always been ready for gaming.

Hmm and if runnign 32bit, 2GB enough, its only for gaming, ill be running nothing bar games and stripping the OS back to its raw bones lol

To the OP, it would seem to me that you know all the facts you need to make the decision already. Exactly what information are you still looking for?

Only for gaming and thus only running 2GB RAM? that does not compute!

A Gamer should have 4GB minimum these days and a 64bit OS to take advantage of the extra memory since it has no performance impact vs XP/32bit that is worth writing a single line about.

You can source the same version of Windows but 64bit and use the 32bit version's product key.

Budget doesn't have to mean 2GB only either, RAM is cheap.

Does 64bit really make much difference? Im only online gaming, 32bit should be able to address most the 4gb

3.25GB on a 512MB GFX card or less with a higher gfx card.

Why install 32bit when there's just no need and why limit future upgrade hassle of having to reinstall a 64bit version.

Install 64bit and sit happy. It's not going to cost anything extra.

I think its because i wrangled a education code that only unlocks 32bit HP W7

They only shipped a disc with that on.

That would be just the disc, you should be able to still activate 64bit HP with your key.

Hmm i heard rumours MS has given out 32bit keys only on the discounted education one... but no harm in trying.

So the conclusion is, their would be not that much drop in frame rate?

Im pairing it up with core i5 and prob 4gb of budget ram now
