Is Windows 8.1 just an update ?

It is.

RTM is Release to Manufacturing. Not the retail launch.

Manufacturers need to test their peripherals and software and prepare software images. That doesn't happen in 30 minutes.

Rtm is still the final version, unless something drastically bad is wrong with it.

Same thing happens with every big os release

yes Rtm is the final version but even if the Rtm was released tomorrow it's nothing to get excited about because the public won't get it for another 2 months~.

We downloaded this at work the other. I quite like it to be honest. Im looking at getting an SSD soon so im thinking of waiting for 8.1 to come out then install it on to an SSD. Im currently using windows 7.

Reading this thread I could just buy the license for windows 8 then when the update is out obviously it will go to 8.1 automatically and no extra license is required?

Yes to Windows 8.

Windows 8 will not upgrade to 8.1 automatically. Service packs and upgrades are not automatically installed, only critical updates from Windows Update.

Correct.

And MS put the iso up on the web too, so you can easily crest a USB 8.1 key when its out.

Its my birthday tomorrow so I think im going to look around for a second hand 128gb SSD :)

Will I be able to use my current HDD (500GB with OS/data on) as just a data HDD. In other words boot from the SSD and then go into "computer" and access the data off it? I should shouldn't I?

^Yes you will

I'd get this..

http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/storage/58229-samsung-ssd-840-evo-120gb/

Check out that review, a stonkingly fast SSD!

-Before installing, set your SATA to AHCI mode in the BIOS, same goes for all SSD's, gets better performance from them.

I'd unplug any other hard drives during the install, then once it's done. Connect the drive back up and use Disk Management in Windwos to assign a drive letter if it doesn't already give it one.

Cheers bud. I will look out for one second hand to save me a few £££ :) Im looking for a new case as well before I buy a new graphics card. Things are getting a little tight in my case.

Good recommendation on unplugging all other drives.

It'll keep the process slicker and less chance of error. Plugging back in the drive will make it it just appear in windows, normally.

Service pack with a poor attempt at improving the gash ui. I just fired up a dreamspark preview copy on vm ware, it is just the same annoying metro ui, except i would have to spend half an hour getting all the shortcuts in the right place so it works right.

Considering most people spend years on same OS 30 mins is nothing, infact it's like a quick break between gaming lol, anyway I look forward to 8.1 since I'm already use to Win8 and Metro(basically nothing new for me to learn).

Like any OS once you have it customised and tweaked to your needs job done and that does not take long.

Up and running, used the 'default' key available to install, then entered mine once Windows was up and running, activated using my own key.

It won't accept your normal W8 key during install

FLYING along on my new Samsung 840 Evo :D
