The downstream rate isn't adaptive on that - it's a Max "up to 8Mbps" you're after, like Zen's (though as Olly suggested, their home250 might work too) or Nildram's.

Also, there's no way you can run CAT5e for 200m and it still work... the maximum quoted is 100m, you may be able to push it a bit further, but 200m... no chance.

Fibre? Could have used CAT5e, and stuck a switch etc in the middle powered by a LAB or something.

Yes the grounding can cause problems but as for 300m.... ive seen it done ( at a warehouse... at least 300m cable length to connect 2 pcs... it worked fine using standard cat5e. They got just less than 10mbs which would be fine for a standard broadbands throughput) so i know its possible. You cannot get the rated speed out of it of course but you can get a useable signal. Tis a bit silly to do this of course but as a last and final resort its worth trying rather than end up on dial up forever

I've just noticed this antenna for a wireless router here : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Wireless_Antennas.html .

I was thinking, as my mate lives just a quarter of a mile up the road, could i run my wireless router with that antenna and receive a strong signal at my house a quarter of a mile away? I would encrypt the network using 128bit to make sure no one else in the area could access it.
The antenna says up to 10miles !

It might work, it depends on whether you have LOS as the signal won't diffract too well.

Probably yes, but it would depend on the number of trees. If you can see his house properly from yours, most likely yes.

Depends, wood contains a large amount of water than can screw up a signal, but it should be fine.

Yes, although there is a possibility you would need more than one, or atleast a directional antenna (maybe a cheaper one) to recieve a decent signal.

I could get an omni-directional one which are cheaper but i dont think it would reach my house.
That directional antenna says 'up to 10 miles'

Should work ok then. Onmi works in all directions, whereas Directional focus the signal in one direction and are better at transmitting signals over long distances.
