ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

I don't understand this MPs voting on amendment to block syria action. What's the difference between that and the main government vote?

What's the next highest threat level we can go to? I suspect we'll be on that tomorrow.

haha, when they can get people in place, and they have been trying their hardest, they'll hit. Us bombing them is not going to make that easier to do, the whole point is its meant to be harder!

Yea, I'm just watching Hillary Benn at the minute and it is a good speech, but from what he said I would say it's because of the iraqi army, supported by our airstrikes, why the tide is turning.

But it looks like we won't have the same support of boots on the ground from the loosely defined FSA in Syria and as such am dubious of its efficacy

Yes, that was my perception as well - it seems to me that Iraq and Syria are very different situations in terms of what ground support can be expected, and who that ground support will be coming from.

In Iraq it seems relatively clear that if IS loses ground then the Iraqi government will gain ground, which I think most people see as a good thing (at least, compared to the alternatives). However, in Syria it seems anything BUT clear cut* which side will benefit if IS is beaten back, not to mention that fact that there isn't even any consesnsus on which side our government actually want to win! People have joked about just nuking the whole country, but to be honest bombing IS without any real long term plan seems only marginally less misguided to me.

*Then again, maybe our super duper intelligence services who brought us great nuggets like Iraq's WMDs have a crystal clear understanding of how it will all pan out.
