Islam and Liver disease

One of his observations was the sheer number of Arabs that, would shortly after takeoff from anywhere on the Middle East, change into western clothing and order alcoholic drinks on the plane.

I used to take the second leg of a flight that was/is popular for those coming from the Middle East into the US and I had a feeling something like that was going on. Just a general impression though.

I wonder what prompted you to do "a quick Google" on this particular conundrum

I am one of those people who routinely links seemingly utterly bizarre things together to come up with new thoughts....

Like Vikings in Greenland and how the traditional Inuit diet leads to a reduction in Blood clotting ability ;) :p

Not scientifically proven, but.....

My old man worked in the Middle East a lot in the late 70s/early 80s. He wasn't killing queen wasps or the like.

One of his observations was the sheer number of Arabs that, would shortly after takeoff from anywhere on the Middle East, change into western clothing and order alcoholic drinks on the plane.
Indeed, I recall when I was given a first class seat on a plane because all the economy classes were unavailable. I noticed that Arabs wearing the traditional clothing were consuming alcohol. I also could not help noticing that the air stewadesses had shorter skirts and showed more cleavage compared to economy class.

That's why they fly over to London during the summer. They can have fun and not get thrown in jail. It's a strange culture.

Mortality is low in places like the us, uk and Japan, but that’s probably down to the high standards of medical care in those countries. Islamic countries is probably low due to religion.

Funnily enough, I found out Wednesday that I have cirrhosis.

Pakistan and Afghanistan is shown has high in the post with the picture by colours.

Most likely due to them consuming home distilled spirits not made to any standard in back street places.

It could also be linked with poor diet and poor drinking water or is it only alcohol which causes this?

"improvements in alcohol quality and a reduction in alcohol consumption have been the major determinants of the steady decline in cirrhosis mortality"

improvements in alcohol quality really caught my eye on this as for me that seems an unexpected factor.

Back to the original question.

I was talking to a Pakistani just the other day who basically confirmed this. Despite Pakistans Islamic culture, "Moonshine" production and consumption is widespread and endemic.

Even their women know all about it but it's swept under a rug. I remember a young girl telling me her mum pointed out where the local "drinking den" and brothel was in their local town in Pakistan.

Moonshine kills a lot of people in India which has a lot of dry states. So I imagine it's worse in a country where religion forbids it and it's even more underground.

Speed Googlefu FTW, I've literally read nothing on this subject except for the OP's post 2 mins ago.

Edit: Uploaded picture to imgur to avoid problems.

Intersting, i would have thought that India would be more red as not only do they still drink alcohol but also use high fats like Gee in cooking

It's always the holier than thou types :p

There's a type of cooking oil they love to use but is banned in the EU too, I forget the name

shows how much you know.

Ghee is healthier to cook with than what 99% of people in the UK use.

high fat =/= unhealthy

also India has a lot of "dry" states where alcohol isn't allowed. also a lot of people don't drink for religious reasons.

i'd use Ghee over rapeseed, sunflower or any other processed oil any day. which is extracted using chemicals. processed oils which are refined without the use of chemicals are much better but still not as good as coconut or ghee.

ghee is just clarified butter after all.

Now, that's what I am talking about :p. And is rather interesting. The analysis could actually be quite complex. (IE not Just culture/religion, but also a possible long standing genetic thing too)

It would be interesting to see the incidence of cirrhosis compared with the actual levels of alcohol consumption by region/country too.
I would say the chart is representative of the quality of healthcare people have access to then anything to do with religion.
