Hi
I'm totally new to web hosting and everything that goes with it.

I bought a domain on Squarespace a couple of years ago and never got round to doing anything. I have now bought hosting on Bluehost to set up a Wordpress site.

I changed the nameservers and DNS records on Squarespace yesterday to point to Bluehost. Today I was wondering why it was taking so long to be able to load the site and hopped on livechat and they said it was working fine their end. I checked downforeveryone and sure enough it said it was fine. So I turned ZenMate VPN on with default settings (Germany) and lo and behold the site works. Then I tried it on my mobile on 4G (EE) and it worked there aswell, but not on wifi (talktalk).

The error i get on Chrome on both laptop and mobile is DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

I changed my DNS server to 1.1.1.1 after following some solution online and the site works too. But obviously this isn't a suitable long term solution.

This also stops me accessing the Wordpress admin page to edit the site.

Any ideas what could be going on here?

As others have pointed out, sounds like propagation and TalkTalk own DNS is just a bit slow.

https://www.whatsmydns.net and https://dnschecker.org are both handy sites for testing domain propagation.

Also using the 'nslookup' command (nslookup domainname DNS host/IP address) and testing against a number of DSN providers, including your own ISP's, is also another useful tool to check.

Put your domain name in here and see if the records come back ok: https://dns.google/

If they do I would imagine it's your ISP DNS being slow to pick the changes up.

Have you pinging your domain name whilst connected to talktalk to see if you get the correct IP for your host back?

Thanks all. Moved over to Krystal, I had the same issue with it appearing almost straight away via VPN but a few hours later it worked via my normal connection. Maybe propagation was just extremely slow with bluehost, but they are ditched now.
