ISP for 16 people sharing

It's the number of connections. It's not a very efficient protocol because of that, and it's a real pain in the arse for shared connections

you have to be within 1KM of the exchange to get full bandwidth. After that it decreses. 15Mbit up to 2KM and nothing after 5.5KM. :/

Plus as its ADSL you might want to consider contention ratios as well. lower the better.

or ukonline 22meg, think ill try get one of the two, since they are in theory the fastest?

Thats only a theoretical maximum for ADSL2+.

You'll get it if you live *in* the exchange, but it'll drop off the further you go....

ok we're in the middle of a smallish town, so im guessing we're quite close to the exchange, is there a website that tells you your distance?

Get the biggest NTL connection you can - it could deal with 9 of us when I was back at uni. No complains about bandwidth useage from NTL, and lots of P2P fun too :).

Make sure you check these LLU providers are available at your exchange, or you're wasting your time.

If they are, definitely pick UKO or Be over an IPStream based ISP. They're less likely to have limits.

Phone up BT, im sure they will tell you where your local exchange is? If you are very close to it, then go for ADSL2. If not consider getting cable installed?

im not sure of the phone number or post code yet, till i get there on thursday, and then we obviosuly wont have the net to browse possible providers, so im just trying to get a head start by writing down loads of numbers :D

ok sam knows, says its just ADSL , no to LLU, so does that mean we will only be able to get 10 at most?

8Mb max, if you happen to be close. Unless you can get cable.

And then you're fighting a losing battle against ISPs with FUPs. Zen will do unlimited for around £90/month. Nildram will do a 50Gb peak time cap for £25.99.

You could go for two connections, maybe. Depends how heavily you use it.

No LLU & no cable :( :( The other option is MAX and afaik AOL are the only people who are close to unlimited (no enforced FUP/Traffic Shapeing)

In general i'd perhaps consider as many wired users as possible as wireless with 16 (heavy) users may struggle. No matter who you go with if anyone hits torrents or p2p with an uncapped upload you will all grind to a halt. Also don't expect to do a lot of low latency online game action as you always find someone wants to download a service pack or update etc when you are playing totoally throwing your lag all over the place.

cheers, everyone wil be wired as there are connections in each room, so you would reccomend AOL over the like of NTL/Telewest e.t.c. I have the 2meg aol here at home and its always been good, but everyone slates aol still..

I'd choose Telewest over ADSL for the most part based on my personal history (i know the product and the company quite well ;)) . If I was going ADSL i'd go AOL simply because they are apparently the closest thing to an unlimited ADSL ISP that you will find atm and i'm in the process of converting our employee's and office over one by one to AOL for exactly this reason.

AOL has a reputation as being for n00bs but as you can now connect without ever having to use the software (hell they even offer a decent Netgear router) you'd be surprised how many people have gone over to the dark side of late. I didn't untill I mentioned it to a few people I know and they admitted they had done the same thing but hadn't said anything due to the ridicule they would undoubtedly suffer.

Perhaps we should have an AOL Pride day for AOLers everywhere to come out of the closet ?
