ISP for gaming

with virgin media, used to have loads of problems then they did some maintence, now i got over 1MB a second downloads (server permitting)

btw im on the 10Mb package

Virgin media if in a cable area. Be if your exchange is enabled. Entanet via their various resellers if you only have standard ADSL available. I am with them via Aquiss, £25 a month for 30/300.

I was with Tiscali for 13 whole days and then I cancelled on the 14th day. The service they offer is so poo I wouldn't even look @ them as an ISP more like a throttle and kill your internet at any time provider.

I went for the 8mb unlimited service and what a joke that was. Most people like me work during the day so you get home @ around 5:30 and want to use the internet. That's a big no no with Tiscali, that’s the time they slow you down to a 56k modem speed!
I use Ventrilo which wouldn't even connect during the peak times and Xfire disconnected every 10min or so. High pings on games, just a really really cr*p service.

I'm now with Fast.co.uk, That's what an ISP should be. Yeah a tad expensive but it's worth it.

30GB download limit is not enough tbh

For a gaming ISP it is :) I get brilliant pings across the continent also.

I don't download much, and 30Gb covers updates, videos, demos etc :)

Don't go with Namesco. Really bad experiences with pings for the last 4 months. Many gamers hopping mad over on the NDO/Namesco forum.

I'm thinking about going over to IDNET soon. :)

Well I’ve just signed my Bro up to Fast4.net. £16 a month for 8mb unlimited.
ADSL should be active any day now and he will be using it for internet and Xbox 360. I'll report back when it's sorted.

Cheers
Carl

Currently looking at BT now .Keep the ideas coming please guys

If i go with BT and am able to use the Home hub thing it says i can make calls over the internet . These calls are they only to skype users or can i call BT landlines for free as well?

If you got £20 a month max then other Enta providers like UKFSN, ADSL24 and Vivaciti to name a few are the best price:allowance:cost ratio you will get.

The home hub from bt is rubbish btw. disconnects a lot and is rather large. :p

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think it's right... so here it is.

The ISP it's self isn't good or bad for gaming, it's where you live. The father away you live, or different locations can send your connection through more or less router etc.

I've had 3 ISP's living in this house, from 2 meg to 8 meg, and i've always had the same ping to servers on all 3 ISP's.

Not 100% on that though so dont bite my head off if someone can prove it wrong! :p

Im with Aquiss. Regularly have the lowest ping on the server (BF2142) - nearly always around 10ms.

They get the thumbs up from me. (although I am on their business product (for the 20:1 contention and higher upload))

You need to find the balance between price, up and downloads and ping.

I have just changed to Sky from Plus Net. Absolutely painless. I now pay a £10 a month against £21.99. I get an additional 1/2 mb download and doble the up load. Average Ping is 38 against 24 with Plusnet. Not much but i notice the difference playing games. But overall I am pleased i made the change.

incluing Mobile numbers within the price .

No you cant, it either comes with free evening calls or free anytime calls but there are just to landlines, not mobiles, or overseas.

UKFSN's MAX 30, 30gb peak 300gb off peak for £20, peak hrs are 8am till 10pm, off peak is 10pm till 8am and all weekends, a cracking ISP, im on their MAX 60 package. :)

I assume you live in London with that ping time? Surely?

ps: I'm with Aquiss too, but looking at Sky or Be.

Close to London, I'm in Southend ~ 1.5KM from my exchange (just under 1km as the crow flies.)

Go with Be if you really want to leave. ;)

Be would work out no different in price to Aquiss, and I already sort my email and webspace out elsewhere now anyway...

I'm tempted just to pay the extra £180 a year to get the best/fastest internet connection I can :) (ie: Be instead of Sky).

ps: Aquiss are good IMHO though!
