Righto my current provider has a FUP that kicks in at 50, no prizes for guessing who, which, quite frankly seems more like a cap than a fup

the result of breaching said FUP is that i might aswell be using dial up as that would probably be quicker despite the fact they state even under restriction regular browsing will remain unnaffected

so i was wondering which ISPs have a reasonable FUP, i doubt there are many with no fup without hard caps or mega bucks as with 3 PCs 2 of which used heavily for gaming and/or heavy net activity, i think moving to an ISP which has a bit more flexibility is probably ideal

sky is tempting but i seem to here a bit of a mixed bag over this (we have sky tv already and mum likes the cheapness of its dsl packages naturally)

-my exchange is only LLU enabled for sky, tiscali and aol before anyone recommends Be and O2 (King's Lynn for those who want all its info)

AOL? :D

Entanet has no FUP. Im on UKFSN, have a look at the different resellers: ADSL24, Falconnet, UKFSN etc. Large usage caps, no throttling :)

Another vote for Entanet, no FUP just bandwidth usage caps so get a package that will accommodate your needs, and if you go over one month you are just charged for the next package up rather than paying by the Gb.

There is no such thing as a good cheap ISP anymore without some sort of restrictions bar Be/O2 really. You get what you pay for.

In your situation I would go with Sky, as the 16mbit/0.75mbit line is only a tenner a month and is unlimited. There is a FUP but I've never been called up on it so it must be pretty fair. Maybe if you are regularly pulling down 200gig+ a month something might be done (no idea) but then IMO that is perfectly 'fair' and I wouldn't want users like that clogging up my ISP anyway.

Gaming can be an an issue as they tend to use interleaved lines. You can get the level of interleaving reduced by raising a ticket though which yields around a 25ms ping, not great but should be fine for the average gamer.

The big downside with Sky is of course the 12month contract. Be became available about a month after I signed up which is pretty annoying, gotta wait until April to switch.

Also bear in mind that it is a 'no frills' ISP, with (to my knowledge) no NNTP server or webspace.

aye thinking sky is a safe bet aslong as im prepaired to nag, it is after all for mums house and as such price is relevant, and given the price of sky im sure shed be tempted

i dont particularly want anything fancy from an ISP just one that doesnt beat your face in just because you actually use the internet

as for the contract, oh well, yes itll be a kick in the teeth if Be/O2 go up soon after but i doubt we are that high on the LLU list for them and as long as Sky dont mess me about then it wont matter much anyway

Entanet would be a far easier and painless option, have you ever tried getting out of a sky contract even after its finished? If your on a 16mb connection from sky its basically LLU using cheap dslam's which are on the whole unreliable at best.

IF AOL is the current isp you will have enough trouble getting out of there. Took me a very long phone call to get them to hand over the MAC.

just got off the phone to AOL, they tried to give me a PS3 or a laptop to sign another Contract with them, Told that Asian man i would rather take one up the tail pipe than stay with them.

just awaiting my MAC so i can try a Enta reseller (Not decided which one yet).

I got out of AOL long ago when they introduced their FUP :) (shouldn't have gone to them in the first place :D )

Is hard deciding which Enta reseller, i like the look of Falconnet.

Have ADSL24 at my parents house and its been very good, Dad works from home over a VPN and has never had any problems since we moved to them from Nildram.

Although I do miss the 24Mbit connction I get from Be* when at home :p

UKFSN here to and can't fault it, moved to them also from AOL when Craphone Whorehouse took over and brought in the FUP, cap's etc...., never looked back. :D

And I guess you've got the facts to back all that hearsay up have you?

I've been with Sky for ~6 months on there so called "cheap dslams" and I've no problems at all. In fact I couldn't be in a better position to say if Sky's equipment was cheap and nasty causing an unreliable service. Our phone line is ~5.5km long with a run of Aluminium in it with 60db downstream att. and we get 2.5mb on LLU without problems.

Another vote for Enta, am on UKFSN, and enta themselves have UK call centres (big plus imo), decent caps, and are far better than pipex who I used to be on. Have been on UKFSN about a year now.

Thread Ressurection!!

I am looking at my alternatives now i got my first FUP e-mail from Tiscali.

Who should i be looking at?

Samknows says i have the following available:

BT
AOL
O2
Be
C+W
Bulldog
Sky/Easynet
TalkTalk

Any reccomendations?

Oh, and apparently i can get UKFSN too, i just went to their site after looking on DSLzone, they seem to have very good reviews?!

Either an Entanet reseller (like UKFSN) or Be broadband if you can get it in your area.

Im on UKFSN and have no problems at all. Very good speed.
