Hi all,

Really hoping you can help me fix a couple of issues with my PC (Spec in Signature). Recently bought an RTX 4080 Super closely followed by a Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 and started having these problems since then. All other components remain the same.

I've had this a few times now where the the PC screen goes black and the fans spin up to maximum - Most of the times this has happened the PC has been idle. I've also noticed that sometimes overnight, the screen resolution must drop to 640x480 as all the open windows are rezied and moved to the upper left hand corner of the monitor. Sometimes, the PC can also become unresponsive overnight where it doesnt seem to wake up. Having checked the event log you can see that windows seems to stop responding as theres no log entries from the time it happens.

I've ran stress tests on both CPU, GPU and Memory with no problem, any games I play run fine (MS Flight Sim, Starfield and Cyberpunk) and theres nothing in the event log to indicate a problem. Hardware is running at stock settings and is not overclocked, other than the XMP memory profile being enabled.

The fact that this happens overnight and while the PC is mostly idle is odd and i really cant figure it out.

Would appreciate any and all advice on this.

Cheers.

Hi again.
I can now tell you its not the Motherboard or the M.2 drive as I've swapped them out for brand new devices. The motherboard is a ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II and i get similar responses back form that in the I get no post screen and the Boot and VGA lights are on.

Also tried dropping to a single DDR chip and swapping between the two with no joy. So that leaves the CPU, unless is the PSU somehow?! In 30 years of computing i've never had a CPU go bad on me but its the only thing left?!

Anyone have any thoughts?

Idle issues with Ryzen are not unusual, but that usually results in a reboot, not the symptoms you describe. The problem can sometimes be mitigated by disabling C-States or using a positive curve in the curve optimiser (i.e increasing the voltage, especially relevant for when the CPU is idle).

PSU: possible.

When you leave the PC idle at night, does it use sleep, or is just running normally? If so, have you tried changing the PCI-E power settings?

If you mean actually sleeping, I've always found sleep to be dodgy. I know there are lots of PCs that it works fine, but it can work differently even between different driver & BIOS versions and hang on random things like USB drive being attached.

Sorry guys, i thought i posted this but i somehow didn't!

The PC died and failed to POST after its last reboot which is what prompted the new motherboard and as I had a new M.2 i was going to use for my PS5, I tired that to no avail. So that would leave only the CPU, PSU and memory as the original components.

The CPU then its still under the 3 year warrantee

there are problems with some 40 series gpus in combination with motherboards (uefi conflict), have you updated your motherboard bios at all?, if you can put your old gpu back in to get a boot, download the latest stable bios for your motherboard, when installed put the 4080s back in and try again.

on the gpu front there is a nvidia firmware update too as well in case updating your motherboard bios dosnt solve the issue.

Hello!

I have been experiencing similar issues since last December when I upgraded my PC. I did not have any issues before the upgrade.

The upgrade involved a new GPU which I ordered from Overclockers, namely a 4080 card, to replace my old 1070. This also called for a new PSU. The local repair shop installed an 850W one. And finally, I doubled my existing RAM from 16GB to 32 GB. The PC itself was also bought from OverClockers, but it's been through many upgrades since then.

After the upgraded PC came home from the local repair shop, the issue has been ongoing. Sometimes it happens multiple times a day, sometimes it does not occur for a week. I am unable to even narrow down my search to specific areas and circumstances, except for this: once the PC runs for an hour, the black screen/reboot/maxed-out fan issue does not appear. It only appears around the time (up to 60 minutes from) first turning the PC on during a given day. Not even once did the issue appear after the first 60 minutes of turning the PC on. As if it needed to "warm up" before it could function.

What exactly happens? Out of the nothingness and without any sign, suddenly my screen turns black, most of the time accompanied by the GPU fan going full speed and then I need to manually reboot the PC using the physical switch (I think it's called hard reset). This issue occurs before even logging on to Windows, it occurs during working on MS Excel; during watching a video on YouTube; or during playing a game. Seemingly at any time, one would say randomly, although nothing in life is random, it's just a word to describe law not yet understood.

After I first had these issues, I took the whole rig back to the local repair guys who ran all sorts of tests and found absolutely nothing! I don't know if an issue can be so hidden that even professional tests don't reveal them - I am no expert - but it would appear this isn't an ordinary issue.

I would consider RMA; getting the GPU replaced but it would be very inconvenient. First, the PC needs to be taken to the local repair shop for them to remove it. Then, I'll need to send it (the GPU) from the Isle of Man to Overclockers. Then, after a while, I would potentially receive a new GPU. Then it needs to be installed. This would be a month without my PC. And it's not even sure the GPU is the culprit.

I hope someone just suddenly comes out with a magic answer or even the solution.

Did you use DDU?

I found that going from series 3000 NVIDIA to series 4000, there were some problems until I used DDU to entirely remove the NVIDIA driver before installing it again.

Also, yes, look to your manufacturer for a BIOS update.
