Issue with a VelociRaptor 300GB

Bought one of about a month ago. I have noticed when the drive is in idle it seems to go into a selftest mode. You can hear the heads chirping all the time. If you access the drive it stops. I have even discconnected the SATA lead and just left it powered up and it still does it.

Apart from the initial power on test I have never heard a drive do this before.

I have ran the WDC Diagnostics and it check out fine.

Is this normal for the drive?

Not noticed it on my 150. Seems a little strange though

Dunno if it's normal but my 150GB does it, sometimes, not all the time. Even before an OS has loaded, ie in my bootloader it sometimes kicks-in. Doesn't seem to affect the performance for me. :confused:

Cheers for the input. Seems strange but doesn't seem to effect performance. Just would love to know what it's doing.
