I bought an SR6015 back in 2021.
the issue is after around 30 minutes of being on the rear right atmos height channel starts to crackle, around every 5 minutes or so.

I confirmed it was definitely the amp and not a speaker/wiring issue.
I sent it back to Peter Tyson, who have in turn sent it to a repairer.

This was about 6 ish weeks ago.

today I got this email from PT (this email was from the repairer to PT)
I hope this email finds you well.

One of our engineers has the above unit of soak test, he has advised the issue is so intermittent that is does not last long enough for them to try to fault find it, the issue could be the digital or analogue PCB, but it could also be something else causing the issue. All the engineer can advise is to send it back as no fault found, he did advise if the fault occurs regularly in the future there is a chance it can be repaired but he did advise it will be an expensive repair.

Please let us know how you wish us to proceed with this, do you want it sent back or do you want us to keep it on soak test for a little longer.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Is this a common issue with AV receivers ?
Am i better getting it sent back to me and finding a repairer who can actually diagnose circuitry and repair, rather than just replace a board.

Could be a dry joint or damaged DAC.

Try using a power amplifier for the rear speakers, that way determine. That way can dismiss the amplifier channels are faulty, but still could be dac or dry joints in the signal path.

Hmm it’s tricky - I mean, how often would it happen?

It also sounds like they did recreate it though so that’s a good start.

What you now need to work through is is it bad enough for you to push for a repair… and that will come from how often / how impactful it is.

It would start after 15-30 minutes (this is roughly as I have never timed it as it just happens whilst watching TV)
then it would happen every 5 minutes or so. I would not have sent it for repair if I could have lived with it, so to have it back not repaired just is not an option for me.

Peter Tyson called me and said they would be covering this and I didn't have to worry, but that was a phonecall and the guy did say that if the repair cost was high then it would have to go higher up, so at present I am still unsure what will happen.
I have googled the repair place and the reviews aren't great, and the fact that their email is only talking about replacing whole boards rather than a component level repair doesn't give me much faith in them either.

Intermittent faults can be hard to diagnose. I had one that made high pitch squeling - digital noise- but tracked it down to DAC/decoding dying due to high temperatures.

I'd try using the pre outs for the effected channels into a power amplifier. If it goes away then it's dry joint between power stages and the speaker terminals of the Marantz. If it still happens then it's the analogue section of the marantz.

If it's high pitch squeling like digitial noise then it's the DAC/decoder.

That sounds faulty and you should be able to secure repair. Richersounds as far as I have known are very good with this sort of thing so I’m hopeful you will get it sorted.

Can you keep this thread updated with the outcome?

I’m interested as I’ve just spent a chunk on a marantz amp myself!

probably good idea to have couple of fans going, denon and marantz run very hot. Unless you use eco mode

Life's too short for this **** surely just insist on a replacement from PT and/or a different model? 6 weeks... I would have folded after 2 or 3 I think.

I've been chasing them and they just kept telling me it was still in the diagnostic stage. Very unimpressed with the repair service.

update from Peter Tyson

  1. We get the unit back and send it to you unrepaired.
  2. As per our returns policy, we give you £700 towards the cost of an alternative Amp (If the Cinema 50 it your choice we can offer you it for £1199 – £700 leaving £499 to pay.
  3. We give the repair agent more time to diagnose the fault, However I can provide no timescale on this, and still no guarantee once they find the fault that it can even be fully repaired.
