Issue with my new build

I have recently built my new rig the spec of which is:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ Stock
Noctua NH-U12P
Asus Maximus Formula
8 Gb (4x2 Gb) Crucial Ballistix Tracer Red @ Stock
BFG 8800 GTS OC 512Mb
320Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.10
500Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
Vista Ultimate 64 bit

Everything in the BIOS is standard, which is largely auto. Except for my cpu multiplier which was set to 6 rather than 8.

The two issues that I am having are 1. The high north and south bridge temperatures, and 2.a strange sort of electronic interference sound which seems to be the RAM.

1. This issue only came to light this evening while I had the case open to resolve the other issue I was actually investigating. The room is at 23oC. My case is an Antec P182 and it has two intake fans (one in the upper chamber and one in the lower chamber) and two exhaust fans plus the psu. This isn’t even under a great deal of load, e.g. if I just have cpu-z, pc probe and firefox open the temp of the north bridge hits the 45oC default warning threshold of pc probe after 5 minutes and then keeps going up to about 47oc, this closely followed a couple of minutes later by the southbridge. However the cpu and motherboard temps don’t go up in the same period by more than a degree or two.

2. The main issue I am having is with the RAM which seems to be making a high pitched noise and sounds kind of like a hard drive being accessed when I scroll up and down in application, when in the BIOS it sound more like sort electronic interference. It is defiantly the ram rather than the hard drives making this noise, as it makes a similar noise (which in both situations ties up with the activity lights on top of the ram) even sitting at the BIOS screen with the hard drives disconnected. It makes the noise in windows with even just one of the 4 sticks installed. It does not seem to be an overvolting issue as going by the screen grab below the RAM is at 1.95v and is rated up to 2.2v. I seem to remember reading somewhere about crucial withdrawing support for the X38 chipset. Could this noise be a manifestation of this incompatibility?

I have just spoken to Crucial on live chat and they have confirmed the withdrawal of compatibility of this RAM for use on X38 and X48 Chipsets. However the chap I was speaking to did say that this noise issue was not one of the reported issues. He did suggest upping the voltage a bit for the ram.

Wow, ram making weird noises, I've never heard of that before! So what are you going to do now, sell/rma it and get another kit from another brand or something? If you bought it at oc.uk maybe you can exchange it for another brand that doesn't make the noise :)

Well I created this thread to try and see if this due to any of the voltages etc being set too low or high. Rather than the ram itself it is probably the capacitors or the like to do with the RAM.

Right, I have just installed a pair of the cheap 512 mb DIMM's that overclockers sell. It still produces the same noise in vista and when scrolling up and down in applications. So it is not the RAM it is the motherboard.

So it looks like I will need to RMA the motherboard. The new one will be my third one as the first one arrived with a bent pin.

Right this issue with the sound is still dragging on. The board has gone through RMA and come back with no fault found. Since then I have been away with work so have not worked on the above machine. Now I am back I am trying to get the issue resolved. So far I have tried:

1. Different RAM
2. 2 different PSU's
3. Removing the sound card
4. Different Graphics card.

So it would seem that the ram is not the source of this issue. As far as I can see it is the motherboard, other than that the only other component it could be is the CPU. The CPU runs at the correct temperature and speed and I have not got any stability issues.

What thoughts do you guys have?

I've had this problem on an old althon xp machine, was really annoying....
one day i was clocking it a bit hard and the noise got worce, then the pc made a pop and smelt of burning stuff.... looked in the side window and it was covered in "puss" like 15 year old squeezing their spots !!!

turns out one of the caps had poped.
I'm sure this won't be the problem with urs.

Have you got the latest drivers and BIOS for this board ?

Yes and it changes tone when going from the post screen into the bios. Once in windows it sounds more like a hard drive noise.

I am bit stuck on what do now as I have already RMA'd it once. Overclockers recokon that there is no fault.

It is running the latest BIOS etc.
