Issues OC'ing DS3 + E4300

Hi guys,

Trying to OC my E4300.

Situation is this - temps and everything are fine, Windows boots perfectly and I can game for hours with the CPU @ 320Mhz FSB to give 2.88Ghz, with 1.456 vcore, +0.1v on the FSB and +0.3v on the memory, with the memory multi/divider/thingy set to 2.66 giving a memory frequency of just 50mhz above stock.

However, sometimes when I close an application, I get a 'BAD_POOL_CALL' BSOD. This also happens if I clock the system @ 300Mhz FSB to give 2.7Ghz, but with the memory absolutely stock.

If I increase the vcore even a tad - ie, to the next option (Which is 1.462 I believe), the machine hangs just after the POS screen, right after checking to boot from CD.

Any suggestions? I don't appear to be having any cooling issues at all.

Gigabyte DS3, Core2Duo E4300 with Arctic 7 Freezer Pro, 8800GTS and 2Gb of OCZ PC6400 Platinum.

Thanks guys!

PSU?

Have you stability tested your oc first with dual prime95 for at least 9 hours on the blend test?

Odd that a higher vcore locks up your pc, should be better with more volts..

Have you disabled all the basic stuff such as eist(enhanced intel speedstep) and enhanced halt state (C1E) ?

Unless its overheating?

I have all that stuff enabled, yet to see it affect an overclock, no harm in switching it off I suppose but equally everything seems fine with it left on :)

He said his temps are fine so assumed that's true..

I also have c1e enabled to lower the multi hen cpu is idle, but for him it maybe stable when stuff is clocked down, and get unstable as soon as it's stressed and clocked higher, best is to have these disabled until you are 100% sure the overclock is stable...

Might also be ram tbh, try a lower multi, just to check if it's stable, instead of overclocking it...
Never hurts having Ram run slower as it's rated speed...

Thing is when your trouble shooting if you 'assume' anything you will die!

The E4300 has a knack of making people think their chips are running 15°C cooler than they actually are.

But he is using the P965 chipset so can't lower than RAM divider, the slowest it can run is 1:1.

If he has the ram on an upward divider then obviously that may be a problem.

Depends on what ram, he might be running on a divider for ram to run faster as FSB...

Anyhow TW Fox, we need more info:
What do you measure temps with and what are the temps?
What ram do you have?
Whats your psu (remote possibility is power shortage) ?

I'm using Intel TAT and Speedfan to measure my CPU temperatures.

I've not disabled anything, didn't realise I could.

It locks up right after POST - immediatly after it checks for bootable CD's so before I've had a chance to have any CPU temp issues.

PSU is a Hiper Type-R Modular 580W.

Memory is OCZ Platinum PC6400.

The BSOD's are not frequent, but occasional. I've got it set to 2.7Ghz at the moment, just done an hour of GTA San Andreas and then exited and no BSOD.

Try lowering the ram divider then and run it under stock speeds, to be safe...
Try let your pc priming overnight, so in the morning you can see if any errors showed up in the processing...

IIRC that BSOD is a generally ram issue.

Manually set your ram latencies + frequency to whatever thay are rated to , as the SPD tables could well be wrong

Also, a lot of people are having issues with those PSUs, usually ending in tears
