So my fiesta mk7 59 plate has developed an annoying 'squeal' at around 2000 to 2300rpm! Above or below this when accelerating its not there and doesn't happen when slowing down. Also doesn't happen when not in gear!

Do I look at a belt / pulley issue? Maybe a transmission related issue? Happens in 2nd / 3rd / 4th / 5th in the same RPM range

It's only just ticked over to 52000 miles!

Is there anything else I should check before I book it in?
 
Again i had similar symptoms with a failing belt tensioner. I just left it until it chucked a belt off breaking one of the pulleys and emptying my radiator of coolant before i was forced to investigate properly.

Being it's only 6 years old and I've never changed them since owning it id say never!

I've taken the decision just to book it in as reading around 'if it goes' the bill will be far bigger than having it looked at and sorted now!
 
Well sorry to raise this again - strangely I booked it in at a Ford Stealership expecting them to come back with loads needing doing, they come back with

"it'll have to get worse before we can diagnose" answer

Googling seems to throw the same bits up as above.. belts / pulleys and a few "tips" on how to quickly check

First up.. talcum powder / WD40 on the belt this should make the noise effectively go away short term if its the belt? if it still squeals I assume its a pulley

I am looking to get to a different garage this week if they can fit some time in to look over it however as I have a morning off tomorrow was wondering if these wonder tips really do work or not!

Only because it reduces friction between the belt and the pulley, which also means whatever is driven by the belt in probably being driven under the speed it should be.

WD40 also attacks things like rubber so will only make the problem worse in the long run
 
Car booked in for Tuesday to have it replaced, no point on keep fussing around with how bad the noise has go :D
 
So Gents

Belt replaced and the noise still exists - I did get out with the mechanic for a test drive and well the noise may sound like a squeal from the drivers side but from the passenger seat its more of a whistle noise, with this in mind the exhaust has been checked for any leaks and nothing obvious - it'll be going back in as it now exhibits a lack of power / missfire type sympton when accelerating so somethings wrong somewhere!
 
Update on this!

Garage are so sure its the drive belt they are taking it back in and redoing the work at there own cost (also they agreed that as they'd said this was the diagnosis its better to disprove it!)

To go with this I've replaced the air filter with no change.

I'd like to say another new belt will magically fix this issue however should I now lean towards a possible blockage in the exhaust somewhere? Do I consider forcing them to check this problem out? I foolishly assumed it was done at the time they checked it over for a "leak"
 
In what way pal? its a definite shrill whistle type noise that happens! where / what would I look at to eliminate it if it was?
 
Well its been a while but a small update!

Second belt on, problem not resolved, water pump changed, not resolved. This leaves just the alternator / Air Con pulleys

The garage have agreed to take it back in again and take the belt off and test drive it over a short distance to see if the same happens.
 
So update on this

Its had a new aux belt, water pump and timing kit. The problem still exists so the garage is taking it back in to remove and check the exhaust.

"Sigh" cars eh?
