Fiver says it's a heat shield, had the same thing on my truck when I got it, DEFINITELY sounded like a belt, priced up everything for it.... then one day crawled under it and noticed a heatshield a little close to the exhaust, bent it back and voila, no more noise :D

So you can take it out of gear and rev the engine to 2000 to 2300rpm with no noise?

Tried running it without the belt on to see if the noise is still there? (as no pulleys are turning)?

Does the water pump run on the fanbelt like the old Fords or do you have a Peugeot engine in yours? (which runs off the cambelt)?

And also why aren't these garages testing the work they have done? Surely they can hear the noise too and you have booked it in for them to diagnose and fix the problem?

If it's a belt of some kind you would think it would whine or squeal at low rpm or very high. Or at least when I've had a problem is always at low rpm

Oh dear I'll climb under and look - if that what it turns out to be :o

nope revving it in gear / out of gear same noise - only difference is when its in gear / pulling away etc the noise lasts longer than when revved up!

The garage did so when it was in pieces hence offering to remove the exhaust and check it over for free!

The aux belt does the water pump / air con / alternator. Both belts have been replaced.

I was lucky enough to be there when they were putting it back together last night and them test driving it / testing it. 3 of them looking over it while revving it and such!

Is it a mechanical whine or a squeal?

Its hard to really tell! I'll try and get a vid of the noise (in fairness its more of a sort of shrill whistle noise!)

Theres no noise when idling, its a case of it starts around 1800rpm through to approx 2500 then appears again at about 3k upwards! obviously after that the engine noise drowns it out. Problem when sitting in the car is it sounds like it comes from the front - from outside its more from underneath

So gents the cars back from the garage today (fair play they've taken the whole exhaust off and put it back on at no cost to me!) and well the guys been up front and told me he doesnt know what it is!

this means I can get that vid of the noise tomorrow!

I'll get on it on the way home from work if I can or when I get parked up at home and can do it then!

And for you guys a short vid from in the engine bay and under the car while stationary - enjoy!

Well its booked in for its major service so the hunt to fix this noise I guess will resume next week when I am off on holiday and service is done! never know miracles might happen

Hmm I aren't too sure what that could be.

Something lose and resonating or a blowing/cracked exhaust manifold but you'd not expect that, OR infact inlet manifold gasket sucking air in? I don't know lol

Could it be possible for there to be a blockage somewhere forcing air out of somewhere it shouldn't be going? (Exhaust that is)

So gents thanks for all the advice.

I took the plunge this evening to climb under the car and have a good look / listen etc and the same in the engine bay. I am certain I have narrowed it down to a section of the exhaust between the Cat / front silencer?

With this in mind all thats in this section is the flexible pipe and the silencer then its just exhaust out to the rear silencer! (psst my technical knowledge of these things is very limited!)

Now question is! I know the front silencer back is replaceable - is the flexible part also replaceable? I ask because it doesnt seem to be able to unbolt from the Cat section like the rest of the exhaust does!

You can generally buy said section but an idea perhaps if you have any custom exhaust makers in your area, pop it in and ask them to check the flexi and fit a new one for you if that's the suspect :)

Cheers for the idea pal! I'll have a butchers see if I can find a local place who does custom exhausts - unless someone pops in here and knows of someone in / around Leeds

Well gents this finally got resolved today!

1 new flexi custom fitted and a front silencer cut out and straight piped through! such a long time to get to the bottom of it! cheers for all the advice above.

Strange that it was causing such as noise as that. When that bit went on my dads car, it just sounded like the exhaust was blowing.

Guy took it out for less than 30secs drive, pulled over looked at it took it in and did the work there and then!

said it was typical of that noise and rev range. Also suggested a new rear engine mount.
