If the lock on your front door wouldn't work, would you call a locksmith or just smash the door off it's hinges? Basically a ridiculous thing to do when there are alternatives that wouldn't have caused damage.

I think that may be a bad example, as I'd personally kick the door down. A new lock (fitted at home) is undoubtedly cheaper than a locksmiths call out charge.
The point is, I'm sure he wouldn't have resorted to cutting the wheel apart if it was a set that was valuable, or that he cared that much about.
I thought about this. Welding a nut onto the bolt is the only viable solution I could think of, but of course you'd have to take it to a 'professional' to do this and labour isn't cheap. Possibly more expensive than a 'cheap' alloy wheel? (

Almost no evidence of using any rounded bolt extraction methods at all. Plenty of head left to massacre.
He just assumed the only option was drilling, and that his drills were made of marshmallow. If he actually did start drilling he would only have had the drill running flat out anyway...

Smashing a door down does not break the lock, it breaks the door frame and possibly the door. Good luck to you if you ever lose your keys.

Welding was certainly an option, but there was a well defined and deep "cup" within the bolt that a suitable peice of tool steel could have been driven in. Even a cold chisel around the edge was an option.
It's pointless defending the guy, he completely ballsed up his initial attempts to fix the situation and then just resorted to more ignorance to fix his previous mistakes.
