IT career path

Hi,

Started in IT about a year ago. Currently have my Comptia A+ 801 & 802 and not really sure where to go from here qualifications or study wise. Is now the time to decided what I want to specialize in and start studying that field or is there more general studying that would serve me well?

Working for a huge international company so exposed to AD, Citrix, Exchange, IOS & Android among others.

Just looking for some advice really

It depends entirely on where you want to go.

Focus technology areas at the moment are VDI, Cloud virtualisation (hybrid and public), IAAS, DAAS, and anything that enables BYOD. Learn those things and you will do well.

Dammit. Every one of these bloody threads always ends up going toward the infrastructure side with a little bit of security.

Think about the business applications! They deserve more love! Why not think about ERP or CRM? Plenty of lucrative career paths on the light side.

Some advice that I was given when I started out: Be hungry, get involved in everything you don't understand, look towards emerging technologies, do the overtime & don't expect official training.

Qualifications are nice, but project work and the rewarded experience often counts for more.

If I were to restart my career in IT with the experience I have now I'd probably ask what IT can do for business, rather than "oooh shiny, I want to play with that".

If you want to move into security then having a firm grounding and experience in general IT work helps a lot at interviews.

Learn everything you can and pick what you like the most, but keep in mind it's longevity. I know several people who concentrated their training in one field too early on and paid the price for it.

You've only been working a year....try as many different areas as you can, and then specialise in whichever area you find most interesting.

Friend of mine went from lowly tech support for a BPM software company and is now an international post sale engineer, earning a clean fortune, traveling the world expenses paid. He is literally living my dream and the guy still emails me for help with stuff :mad:
