Hi.
Im wondering if anyones got some suggestions as to a piece of clothing that i can wear with a shirt/tie as a jacket type thingy. But not a suit.

Odd question i know, but i start a new job on monday and its a shirt/tie jobbo, which is odd for me, as im used to wearing a pair of jeans and a tshirt to do the same job in the past. :p

Thanks in advance all. :)

From a female point of view, a shirt/tie combo and jeans with a smart jacket looks good, as long as the tie is narrow and plain.

A jacket and jeans can also be teamed with a thin round neck / crew neck jumper as this also looks quite smart.

I guess you should take a look at what other people are wearing to guage what the general feeling is towards workwear.

Good luck with the new job.

Get yourself to Asda, spend a few quid on some basic trousers and shirts etc then when you're in work sus out what other people wear. Find out if there is a dressing down day too.

Depends on the company when it comes to IT.... Its always worth checking on the dress code, but what I usually do is wear shirt/tie on the first day and check everyone else out... then if they laugh and say get rid of the tie, its not too much of a problem..

shirt and tie with jeans  :p

I just wear short/tie/trousers with no jacket most of the time and a suit if I have meetings etc

Get to TK max for much cheapness of Jackets that will go with casual trousers and jeans witha shirt and tie, I tend to mangle elbows and pockets quite fast so buy 2/3 a year. Brown, blues, dark greens etc etc can all go well with jeans and shirt and tie or not and still look smart.

Does depend on there dress code too as if they dont allow jeans of casusal stuff best get a suit!

I'll second that you don't want to go out and blow a load of cash and then find out everyone else wears something different. Go with something cheap and smart the first day and take it from there.

same but go to tescos

"feed the machine"

I wear Tshirt and top with trousers. Top makes it look ok, not too smart but not scruffy and when under desks moving bits around, in the store room getting dusty ect i dont mind the jumper gettign a bit mucky. Trousers as when we go out, put on fleece jacket which hides the jumper/tshirt and looks not too bad.

But most places will be shirt/tie/trousers.

good luck with the job :)

:D

Pair of jeans, long sleeved shirt, V-neck jumper with shirt bottom, half cuffs and collar sticking out, smartish shoes. Tuck sirt back in for smarter look. Winner.

It depends on the company dress-code. A lot of places won't allow jeans at all, and I definately wouldn't risk it on your first day. The best idea is always to go looking tidy (shirt, tie, trousers, shoes) and work from there.
I did summer work for a major IT company and the office was "smart-casual" but jeans were a definate no.

Agreed 100%

Can't think of a single good-sized company that allowed jeans. Just not right unless its dress down day.

we allow jeans for non customer facing roles, however even when working in the office I always wear trousers/shirt/tie

TBH I prefer it that way keeps my works clothes and my clothes seperate

Our call centre for the police is smart casual, but normally when we have visitors we have to wear shirt n trousers 9-5.. I do when im on 7-3s but lates and nights I wear what ever..

depends on who i'm visiting, customers its shirt and tie (no comical ones they were so 90's) but I wear pale coloured shirts not white, if its more socialable I wear smart trousers or denim with a crew neck shirt and single breasted jacket

Ironically my current employer seems fairly casual about dresscode with the exception of jeans. Officially you aren't even allowed to wear jeans on dress-down day (every friday)! This kind of defeats the object of dressdown in my eyes as the difference between what people wear then and the rest of the week is minimal, with the exception of trainers. For example Chinos+t-shirt is perfectly fine on a normal day.

Contrast with my previous employer which for a long time was shirt+tie 4 days a week, and pretty much anything goes on friday.

How can anyone advise you when a dress code is so specific? Just play it safe and wear a suit. Its your first day - make a positive impression.
