IT consultant

I work for a financial software vendor as the moment doing internal support so i guess i could move across in that but i really dont have any real interest in the financial markets and i dont want to be a good i dont find interesting. thanks for all the replys guys.

you don't necessarily have to - we've got techies who don't know anything about the business side nor really care though know lots about say rate feeds/APIs etc...

You want to work for a data infomation management company, learn the systems, after 3 years move over to there competitors for another 3 years, then get contracting you can earn 400 a day plus. those companies charge 1000s to companies like hedge funds, banks etc..

Exactly. To me a consultant is someone who has a very broad knowledge of the field but has specialist knowledge of his chosen area.

You need to specialise imho to be a consultant, so first thing I'd say is what do you want to be a consultant of?

Agreed specialising helps, but it's not the be all and end all.

Broad knowledge is far more valuable to smaller/medium clients on the whole while a much larger firm might only require a focused specialised area to be concentrated on.

Do you work in that field?

I am a "consultant" and I dont know what that means.... the word is used so losely now that I dont think it has any meaning at all. The best thing for you to do is to continue what you are doing even if it is support (and you dont enjoy it that much) but you are so early on in your career that it should be the least of your worries. Learn the work inside out that you are doing at the moment and once that is achieved you will become invaluable...then you can push for things that you want, and perhaps move to a position where you enjoy what you do... if all else fails you will have the extra experience in the bag and you can take it elsewhere to another company!
