Hi Guys

Wondering if i can get some advice.

My company are asking me which route I would like to take in regards to qualifications.

Stuck between the different types, I have the choice of Networking (Cisco mainly), telephone systems (Mitel, Avaya) or more IT related courses such as Microsoft etc.

I'd kinda like to do a mixture of all of them but what would you guys recommend? Would you recommend a certain course?

Cisco certs are awesome....if you will work with Cisco in the future. They contain much more base general knowledge than specific telephony systems though.

What do you want to get out of it?

I would avoid the telephony stuff, do Cisco stuff if you want better on paper quals and the Microsoft stuff if you will genuinely apply it to MS products and environments.
 
It depends what you want to learn, Cisco/MS qualifications are good for teaching you things but as a mark on a CV their pretty worthless as they become obsolete unlike degrees/HND's/etc.

Why avoid phone stuff? its a job quite in demand with good pay. But like I said before it depends where he is now. As some MS knowledge will always help first
 
I have been given the same choice in my company, they are letting me do both cisco and microsoft quals. If I had to chose it would definitely be Cisco though. Microsoft is well known but I think Cisco is more Internationally recognised and harder to achieve.

It does depend on where I want to go, which the company are also asking me. I just honestly do not know.

I do currently have an MCDST, a Microsoft qual, but it isn't the best. Just desktop support.

I think I will take Cisco as a definite, Microsoft as secondary and try to grab the Mitel 3300 accreditation. Also try and get a few VMWare quals?

Don't generalise....specialise. :)
 
There's definitely a happy medium between specialising and generalising, however for a lot of things if you specialise in one particular thing you are usually also very good generally in things around that area.

For instance someone specialising in a particular area of security I'd also expect to have pretty good general security skills.

That made sense in my head anyway :p

Definitely different here mate :)

I have been in companies who operate as you mentioned though, promise the world and deliver nothing.

This particular company is paying for me to learn how to drive, providing me a car once I'm passed and have a genuine will to get me qualified.
