IT Qualification

I've been on/off studying for my A+ for the last three years or so, got a little messed up when they changed the whole thing last year and have now thrown in performance based questions. Got my first of the exams in January, but I still can't help but feel that some of the questions will be pointless when it comes to the workplace; anyone needed to look up IRQ codes recently? I've never had to in the three years I've been a tech!

I thought they would have weened out stuff like IRQ assignments with the new A+ in 2010(I think). I did the version before that. There are other CompTIA certs, I also did Network+, I think there is Server+, Linux+ and others. Maybe something like Linux would be a better idea as I would imagine it's a more specialised field.

An A+ could get you a job as a 'PC Engineer' for non enterprise levels, i.e home user level, setting up home networks, removing viruses and the like.

I agree Slinxy its about getting in on the bottom rung getting some experience and moving up.

Indeed. No idea why people are suggesting specialisms generally reserved for experienced people as a starting point.

VM is a hot area at the moment, but believe me, I wont be trusting anyone who just has a VM cert and zero experince to look after our farms.

Everyone is different, if you want to start at the bottom and work your way up, go for it. My experience of seeing people do this is loose promises and waiting indefinite amounts of time to progress.

I personally did my VMware & EMC qualifications in my own time, got a job and was placed with a senior member of staff to learn and shadow from for a year.

If you care about money, the difference of doing this is significant. But money isn't everything to everyone :)

Everyone has different career paths. :) I've seen people cram like hell for their novell and land a top job after. I also know many paper tigers, that are cert'd to the tooth, but can't resolve any issues without refering to reference material or passing the issue on. I even known a few people who has paid for someone else to take their certs..

The issue with IT at the moment, with google; everyone thinks they are expert, and specialisation is the only thing that pays well, but most employeers would prefer experince over certifications any day, and if the company needs a certain number of cert'd people for partnership or advertisement, they would be more than happy to pay for the training/exams.

Not the only one ;).

Me three.. lol

30 years in IT next year :(

6 years of full time IT based education
13 years of full time IT based employement, I had to take a year out when I got made redundant from one job. Got a job 1 year later (to the day ;) ), came back full of beans and all guns firing for it to be zapped away from me within two months... lol

IT is a youngs persons game, I really don't want to go into management nor fixing stuff at 50.
