Howdy,

so i got this IT technician job interview 2moro for a school, and was just wondering if any1 could perhaps give me a heads up on type of questions they'll ask me. What type of things shoudl i know etc. I have some good questions written down to ask the interviewer/s but if anyone can think of other good questiosn that would possibly make me sound more employable if at all possible that would be great.

cheers

Some of the questions I got asked when I went for an interview for a college technicians job were:

What is a laser printer?
Explain the term TCP/IP.
What is the registry? Would you allow a student access to it if they requested it?

Pretty straight forward heh!

Who cares

no it works and thats all you need to know
What is the registry? Would you allow a student access to it if they requested it?
No the little buggers cant

Pretty straight forward heh!

my questions were can you maintain a network, can you strip down a pc, can you use excel, when can you start.

i work in a primaly school and my job involves switching green speaker wires from blue hole to green hole, cleaning disks that are "broke", restarting machines, seting printers to 'default printer'.

that why i spent most of my time on these forums between 9:00 and 4:00 :)

I got asked some stinkers in a recent interview.

3 Positive qualities
3 negative qualities (watch out for this question, it's a stinker. A good, but predicatible answer would be a perfectionist. Try and turn the - into and +)

What areas of the job would you be at your weakest? (what do they need to train you on)

Biggest mistake you have made at a job?

How would your collegues discribe you?

Obviously they will be asking you specifics regarding the job, software and hardware knowledge etc.

What you you do in this scenario, that scenario?

I will try and think of some more after lunch. I can't think that well on my current empty stomach.

I got the job BTW :D But i turned it down.

I doubt they'll ask you many technical questions, it'll mainly be about team work etc and maybe your troubleshooting skills.

When I went for my job I had a paper based test with things like..

What is TCP/IP?
How do you troubleshoot?

Things like that... nothing too difficult

You may get a question like......."A pc on the network has a BSOD......what do you do next?"

I've also been given a budget to work to and asked what pc i would build for the budget. Basically it shows your current grasp of hardware platforms, and basically that you know your hardware.

Hope they help. Either way, good luck :)

You will get questions like if a child comes up and say I have a secrete but willyou promise not to tell anyone what would you do.

Ask about computer clubs and dinner or after school and if there are none offer to start one. Check the school website out if its rubbish or they don’t have one offer to build one as part of the job. Show how you can explain problems to staff in simple terms without lots of tech words.

” Explain the term TCP/IP.”
That’s very rare you shouldn’t even be asked or expected to know that. You can bet the people interviewing you don’t. If you do get asked its more likely they want something simple like used for networking. We could do with a bit more info like school size do they have a network manger. The type of questions you get asked will depend on that.

If you get the job visit http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums. Its where all us techs hang out.

read the schools Ofstread report (spelt that wrong and no idea how you spell it)

Asking what TCP/IP is seems like a bit of a curveball to me as it could be an extremely complex question, especially when comparing it to "what is a laser printer".

Depending on the type of detail they may be after, they're more likely to see if you understand basic networking by asking what MAC is/does, fundamentals of TCP/UDP, etc.

I'd imagine a school wouldn't ask you about IP specifically as they probably don't understand it fully themselves. At most they might ask you what an IP address is but even that can lead to an overcomplicated answer dependant on the interviewee.

If I was after a technician I'd be focusing on the physical side of things, such as basic component/cabling knowledge, bit of troubleshooting then rollout stuff, ie. RIS/Imaging etc.

What level Tech job is it? Becta have a framework level system which will let you know what type of jobs and questions you will get. It’s only the higher level and networking mangers that have networking stuff as part of the job. So if its a low level Tech job you should have it easy.

1. The thing that they use to print the serial number on lasers, as seen on star wars.

2. The Current Position In Pixels of my pr0n

3. The thing they call the names from at the beginning of class, sure i'd let em see and use it.

Its a high school, and yeah they do have a network manager, the job spiel said u'd be working under supervision at a time as well as on your own etc.

Which High School mate?

Good luck :)

John Spence Community High school, in North Shields.

i went to bloody St Thomas More high school near it and we always had fights between us and them, so hopefully they won't hold that against me.

I could write a whole article on this!
But the basics - if you are top of your game then you shouldn't be worried about the technical questions as such. You either know your stuff or you don't.

What will more than likely throw you is the "needle" questions that they ask to make you think on the spot and try work out what kind of person you are. There have already been some good replies on these type of questions - and the trick is to keep everything positive and view their company in a positive light. Flattery goes a long way, but don't go OTT.
Be particularly careful that you do not slate any past companies or people you work with.

Some others are:
What newspaper(s) do you read / what took your notice in today's paper?
What appeals to you most about this job?
Where do you expect to be in 3 years time?

Remember - there are 3 main things any interviewer wants to find out from an interview.
1) CAN you do you the job?
2) WILL you do the job if they employ you?
3) Will you fit into the team?
