IT Technician - interview help

you arrive at a PC and it wont start up, there is a message on the screen saying "missing NTLDR"

if you get asked this one, dont forget to check the floppy drive doesnt have a disk in it. i did once :(

One important thing to remeber is what will you say if they ask youa question you dont know the answer too. As im sure at some point a problem will come up on the network and you will have no idea how to fix it. This i think is the reason they sometimes ask odd questions.

Questions i have been asked in my years as administrator job interviews would include,

1) what is TCP/IP - been asked a few times on this.
2) what is a normal.dot used for.
3) how can you increase the speed of a PC
4) what does defrag do
5) what is a RJ45
6) how do you kill a rogue process
7) name 5 internet sites you would block for users
8) what does veritas mean to you
9) how many bits in a terabyte.....its a lot lol.
10 ) how long will a exchange server take to turn off.

those are just a few questions. some are short answers, others are meant to probe how much info you have on systems by not really giving you much help like question 2.

Be yourself, be confident, read up a little on the company too and GOOD LUCK!

John Spence Community High school, in North Shields.

i went to bloody St Thomas More high school near it and we always had fights between us and them, so hopefully they won't hold that against me.

Physical computer security. Ask them about it if they dont ask you. Last thing you want is for a PC to walkabout when youre in charge...

Look at their website and tell them how you might improve on it.

I did'nt get asked anything too technical when i got the job where i am now (been promoted to network manager since).

1. Mostly scenario based questions on how you would priorotise if two or three problems came up at the same time.

2. Whats the difference between a switch and a hub.

3. Whats the single most ICT related important thing about working in a school environment where exams are done online etc. (Backups)

4. You arrive at a printer which is not working. What steps do you take to find the fault and in which order.

5. A user cant log onto their computer with their password. What steps do you take and in which order to determine the problem.

6. How do/would you deal with users with a limited technical knowledge.

7. How would you feel about doing other jobs like cleaning mice balls, tidying the office etc.

Make sure you ask some questions and show your interested - maybe make some notes at the interview. The only other thing is to show your commited as most people dont stop long in these posts because of the pay etc - esp in Staffordshire :)

Good luck
