Can some of the people who started off in first line support say (if you dont mind that is), how long you had to be first line support before you left and managed to get a decent paying job. I ask because if i dont manage to get into the army after my degree, im pretty much stuck with a first line support job.

I was lucky in that the team I joined for my first job as everyone in the team did everything, so you did 1st line, 2nd line, project work, rollouts etc. So if you can find a role like that it's a good start :)

Try get an industrial placement at somewhere big for the summers while studying your degree. I can't stress how much this really helps you and looks good on your CV..

Currently training up on Linux, DNS & Bind as well as unattended Windows installs to move into administrator role and away from the labs.

I've been in my current job since I left school...So just over 5 years I think.

I've just gone up the company from Building to testing everything...(Desktops / Servers etc...) But I also do all of the Project work that involves the server cabinets, so I install them on site at some Police HQ's etc...which is a nice change of scenery.

However I shant go into pay...As it's rather poor =/ Which is annoying to say the least...I started on 7.2k though. It's gone up obviously, but it would be nice if it was a tad higher.

First - Network Engineer, bit of a misleading title, it was small business IT and a lot of server stuff using SBS. c. £24k

Second - Backoffice engineer, network and server admin generally, replacing netware with AD, exchange upgrades, network redesign. £38k (contracting)

Current - Infrastructure architect. Network and infrastructure design for an ISP/MSP, anything and everything really. MPLS to SANs, try and avoid servers these days though. £68k + bonuses etc...

BSc Computer Science (First Honours) rescently finished this in my current job

Now i am a bit in limbo as the contracting market is pretty fierce so i dont want to leave a stable job, traveling while i have a bit of time but will focus on my future prospects when i have worked out what i want to do

@bigredshark
Do you contract or are perm staff?

First job title: External Support Analyst
First job salary: £12,000
Second job title: IT Support Analyst (why is it always analyst?)
Second job salary: £14,000
Current job: IT Systems Engineer

At my second job, I was there for over 4 years and ended up running the IT systems and earning £35k a year (plus extras).

I'm on a similar wage now, as I decided to leave the cushy job and restart my life a bit. Just need to get working up that ladder now!
