Any sort of promotion in a school is good going!

Fun fact, the IT manager for the school I volunteered at was/is a good friend of mine. I'm now his consultant for anything virtualisation, networks or security :D

Woo... Old. I'm game :)
1st job: Mobile phone dev/tester. 18k starting. 24k+pens by end of year 1. The co. went bankrupt during .com bubble burst.
2nd job: Not IT related
3rd job: Not IT related
4th job: 2nd line support in education. 18k starting, 41k on leaving.
5th job (and current): 3rd line support and networking engineer. With some Windows infrastructure thrown in. And server admin. Everything really. £less than #4. Yep, paycut for the better technical position!

My first IT job was during the summer holidays when studying Computer Science at Loughborough (aka Lufbra). My old college lecturer got in touch and I did a five week contract for BHP (now BHP Billiton) in London. Got something like £250 a week which was a huge amount for me then - topped up the beer fund no end! :D

During my year-out did a few more contracts. Best one was at DERA in Farnborough when the air-show was on. The office windows used to rattle a lot when planes buzzed over.

That used to be the point of a junior role for people to gain some extra knowledge and experience.

This is what annoys me at times a lot of places wont even look at you if you haven't worked for another comapny well how is anyone suppose to find a job then?

I agree about degree i know some many people that have them and don't have a clue about computers yet some people that don't have any can do the job but never get looked at.

Agreed - I suppose my point was, we have 'junior' roles which require some experience. Some organisations have the capacity to train people and throw resources at their staff, but not all do. Some need to take people who can do the job from day one. There are roles at the very bottom which don't pay that well but they are important for 6 to 18 months to get your feet and find a good grounding - these require enthusiasm and good basic knowledge of computers, not a lot more. A degree requirement is, IMO not a necessity. I do find the graduates, in general, have good communication skills and the ability to work alone more effectively. I'd say this is less prevalent in non-grads (although some are better than graduates, admittedly).

Anyway, back to the point, what I meant in my post was there is a misconception that because they someone can fix their PC at home they can work effectively in an enterprise environment. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing!

Second job description: When 1st and 2nd line couldn't solve a problem, they'd send me. Normally plugging a PC in or a simple hardware / software fix. Piece of cake, found this job much easier than telephone support!
Current job: Basically a jack of all trades IT guy from website development to PC repairs to server installation. My next move will be a more specialised role :)

I was 1st line support for a year, then got promoted to field technician and then after 3 years I moved to my current job and have been here for almost 2 years.
