It's also worth remembering that they had marshals on the track laying down cement dust, which they won't do under a VSC.
You would see the problem if there was an actual obstruction in the pit lane and two cars came diving in.
150mph right turn with pit entry on the right and all signage is out there on the left it's not where you would be looking.
Penalties were fair, just doesn't seem like the best set up to warn of possible danger.
"As Masi said: "The map indicating those is distributed to all the teams in my event notes, and is part of the pitlane diagram. Obviously it is also in what forms part of the race director's event notes, which is used for the drivers' meeting."
"Further, there are two other warning systems in place to help teams in such circumstances. The software that teams use to monitor the track switches to show the pitlane area in red, while there is also a notification made on one of the official F1 timing pages that the pitlane is closed."
"
Mercedes, in the split second in which it had to react to the safety car, had also not spotted the changes in the software system nor the Timing Page.
As Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said: "We spotted that last minute back home. One of the strategists just shouted into the radio whilst we were entering the pitlane."

Now you lot can stop moaning.
It was Mercs fault.
Not a single person is moaning. Almost every fan, except yourself, agrees that there should be a better system, on safety grounds alone. Good thing there wasn’t a serious incident in the pit lane. It can’t be difficult for a message to pop up on the steering wheel or from the fia over the radio. That doesn’t fit your troll posting though.
When you are turning you are looking towards the apex and beyond so on a right hand bend you would be looking towards the right.
It's also worth remembering that they had marshals on the track laying down cement dust, which they won't do under a VSC.
And here is the sign, just above the apex, on the right, because when you are turning right, things on the left appear on the right first.
There is a system in place that works.
Only 2 teams failed.
The other teams done there home work and knew the rules...
Now. If this was anyone else you would have said nothing....
So you want to get teams to pay for a new steering wheel that connects to the FIA?
They are trying to keep the costs down.
The team should have told him over the radio? do you want the FIA to drive the car for them?
Me being a troll for stating facts? Grow up.

I think it's a bit daft not having a sign on the immediate entry to pit lane, if the pit lane opens between someone passing the last sign and approaching the pit entry how are they to know in time?
So you want to get teams to pay for a new steering wheel that connects to the FIA?
It's a safety protocol, if 2 cars from 2 teams have managed to miss it, then the procedure could be improved, next time there might be something genuinely 'dangerous' to encounter in the pits.
No harm in adding it, but its a failure of the teams processes, not the FIA's or anything else. Primarily it should be those teams who need to implement measures to prevent this happening again.
So you want to get teams to pay for a new steering wheel that connects to the FIA?
Direct to car marshalling already exists. It's sent by the FIA via the FOM telemetry system. I don't know if they send pit open/closed though. I expect not because otherwise this situation wouldn't happen.
There have been recent examples of drivers not seeing the lights on the wheel. Norris and Hamilton have had penalties for ignoring yellow flags this season for example. An indicator on the wheel for this specific scenario will help of course, but it won't stop it from ever happening again.
Drivers should not be solely relying on one warning system anyway, if the wheel lights do not work for some reason and they miss a yellow flag on track, that is not a valid excuse.
First 10/10 race for me since Vettel's last victory... Am loving Hamilton's crying!
